Got a HO72 Detroit Locked rear end

Won it on e bay for $50, plus shipping from Minnesota. I am just getting the center section and posibly the axles if it doesnt cost too much. The rears housing had been converted to disc brakes but they had been welded on to the housing. Plus the guy didnt want to ship the whole thing. Anyway, I have pictures of it but cant post them. If anyone can do it for me I can e mail them to whoever and they can post it if anyone wants to see it.

Is it a 1/2 ton rear end? Just asking 'cause I never heard of rear discs for a 3/4-1 ton truck before.

I just found out mine is a No-Spin positrac rear end, I didn't even know it till I checked the axle code. No wonder it spins both tires!

The discs arent original, they are newer four wheel drive hubs and rotors with the brackets welded onto the axle housing, thats what the seller told me at least.

1969GMC-That looks a lot like the one I am getting, he didnt get a close enough picture at that angle, but there is four pinions and a opening like you have circled in your picture. Otherwise it looks exactly like yours excpet it looks much cleaner.

The main difference from what I can tell between the 52 and 72 is that the 72 uses ball bearings for pinion bearings. I am assuming the 11,000 rated axle is the 72 and the 5,000 and 7,000 pound axles were the 52, from what the factory manuals have in them. I am hoping that the whole center section will swap over to my 52 housing.

the H052 was rated at 5200# and the H072 at 7200#, and the H110 was rated at 11000#, iirc. the 110 has the diff cover welded on from the factory, and was a bigger axle overall. the H072 did have the ball bearings for the pinion, but otherwise the axles are the same (except for brakes). the circled part in my pic is where you can see the No-Spin (Detroit), as I didn't know how to ID one when I bought the diff, but now I know...if you see metal, you're good, if you see the spiders, then you're open

EDIT: BTW, good score! I got my whole axle for $100, but had to drive to W.PA to get it, and its a 2wd axle so it will need to be modified to run in a 4x4. However, now I am thinking about selling it.

Does it fit inside the H072 open carrier? Or is it a replacement carrier. I only ask because I'm not familiar with it. But would like to find one for my H052 in my 71.

Also Blackbird's in Washinton, sells rear disc set-ups for a lot of 3/4 and 1 ton applications.

It's a replacement carrier. I have a detroit locker in my HO52. You'll love it. Take this opportunity to get a set of 3.90s while you're at it, or stay with the 4.10s.....

I cant believe that thing ran twice on ebay and I didn't see it either time!!
It would have been mine had I seen it!
(I might have even got there faster than Da-Burb?)

Way good score, I paid more than that for just a center chunk with a 4.10 locker.

If you decide not to pay the shipping on that, let me know. I would be glad to buy it.

All I am getting is the center section and maybe the axle shafts. Can't afford to ship a whole rear axle and its been welded on anyway. I am just going to swap out the center sections and keep my open center section as a spare. I bet shipping will cost twice as much as my winning bid, actually I am the only one that bid on it. I hope its what he was advertising it as. Can anyone close by go check it out for me? lol.

Ok, you will be the first. I think I am getting it and the axles shafts for $160 shipped. He says its a locker for sure, I told him what to look for and he said it was what I said it should be. I will hopefully get them in the next week or so.

I'd say save the shipping on the axles....why do you need them... the 3/4 ton ones you have now are the same... same spline count, same lenght, even between the HO72 and the HO52.

Its always good to have spares, especially for such oddball rears like the Eatons. Its not much more cost anyway, like $20 more.

Well, it appears I wopnt be getting the axles anyway. The guy decided that they will be mnore to ship and seems to be a bit confused on what he wants. He quoted two different shipping charges after I asked him how much it would be with and without axles shipped. He said he couldnt ship the axles with the center section since they would be over the max weight, which I understand. At least I will be getting the locker, hopefully.
