to wing vent, or not to wing vent?

my father in law has a 48 gmc with no door wing vent, yet sometimes we'll see a truck with 'em, were these an option or ?

I believe it was in 50 that they went to the vent wings..not positive though..my 50 had one of each!

They became standard in 52.These old trucks are pretty warm inside without them in the summer sun too
