292 Inline...

What would be required to swap a 283 V8 for a 292 Inline 6? Will it bolt right up to a TH350? In 4x4 trucks V8's are mounted in the inline 6 postion correct? What would you guys pay for a (stock)rebuilt 292? Any info greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Brian

Hey Brian, it seems like we have the same wavelength. I am contemplating putting a 292 in my truck. I believe the motor mounts will be an issue. The engine will bolt up to your TH350 no problem, though.

I have a line on a free 292, but its in a '70 C/30 thats been sitting for 15 years and is sinking into the ground...i'm guessing it needs rebuilt, and I have no idea what a freshly rebuilt 292 would go for. Maybe you could use your 283 as trading stock, since some people absolutely love them.

Anyone Else?

You will have to replace the passenger side motor mount tower. The engine wire harness should work. The bell housing should bolt right up. The fuel line from the gas tank is 5/16 oof an inch, should be OK for a 283. Depending on what you are going to use the truck for, you might want to keep the 292. The 292 has better bottom end torque than a 350.

If you have powersteering and or powerbrakes you will need the correct brackets for the ps pump and an overslung or a tiny air cleaner to clear the brake booster. Both of those items aren't easy to come by.

PS Lgriffen, you can make a signature in your control panel, it will save you having to type it out each time you post :p

The 292 I have a line on won't be free, but yes it is rebuilt. My 283 is begining to run tired...so I'm thinking of tempory engine options and the 292 has neat factor. I really do like my 283 so I wouldn't want to trade or sell to finance the replacement, although I'm not too worried about the $$$ at this time.

I'm wondering if I should just yank the engine (the 283)this winter and have it rebuilt, rather than try to do it myself over time and still drive my truck with another engine?

Lgriffin, thanks for that info.

Well I do have Power Steering but not Power Brakes. Engine possibly comes with the air cleaner so it's not that big of deal. Thanks for the info Gee Emm.
