Going to relist it on Ebay and see what I can get for it. Probably start the auction at $.99 and hope someone bids on it. Hate to throw it in the metal scrap bin.

We all might think that since a brand spanking new one cost $300 and that is not even GM and like mine, it doesn't include the mounting bracket.

Couple questions. These are probably simple but...
How is the band attached to the tailgate?
Does the GMC emblem come off and can I put a Chevrolet one on? If it does come off will it be noticable that there was a GMC one there? Different color or shade where the emblem was?

answer questions

ELVIS50183 To answer your questions, it mounts with 4 screws from the inside of the tailgate. The screws screw into those slip-in captive nuts like are used for sheet metal applications. The GMC emblem does come off but it would probably have a mark where the emblem was. The difference between the Chevy and the GMC band are the GMC is on the left side and the Chevrolet is on the right side, the GMC mounts with 3 nuts and the Chevrolet with 4. The GMC is much shorter than the Chevrolet so you might be able to cover the spot where the GMC emblem was with the Chevrolet emblem. Then there are to styles of these tailgate trim pieces, make sure you have the one to fit your tailgate. There is a early 73-80, and late model 1981-1987.
I just went through all this with my truck so I have done a lot of research but finally found a very clean one on this website that I purchased from a guy in Bryan Texas.

1. Tailgate Trim Panel Assembly mounts inside the tailgate cavity using 4 sheet metal screws that screw in from inside the tailgate to a mounting bracket that is attached to the trim panel. The variable is the mounting bracket. The bracket on 73-80 versus the bracket on 81-87 pickup is that the 81-87 tailgate has a deeper cavity than the 73-80 requiring a bracket that can accomodate the deeper cavity as the 73-80 tailgate has a less deeper cavity requiring a bracket not as deep.

2. GMC lettering is on the left and Chevrolet is on the right. GMC has 3 holes and GMC lettering are slightly taller. Cheverolet has 4 holes and both are mounted with a press-on nut over the protrusions on the lettering. I would think there would be a discoloration behind the GMC lettering.

3. This trim piece has a border that surrounds the perimeter of the panel while the 73-80 does not have that feature.

4. This trim band is without the mounting bracket. You would have to use one from the one you are replacing, if you have one. By bending back the tabs holding the mounting bracket to the panel you can remove or replace the mounting bracket.

Thank you both. I have a new/cheap tailgate on my truck with no holes. I don't know if they originally came with the holes but I guess I'll have mark the holes and drill them out myself when I get my tailgate band. Wish yours was a Chevrolet one I'd buy it real quick.
