Front end work
1) Got a quote from a local shop today to do upper control arm bushings (both sides) and upper & lower ball joints (both sides as well). $660 and change. How hard is this work? The quote $145 labor, 39.99 alignment, balance in parts. Is this all work that I can do at home? What kind of tools/ finnesse work is involved here?
2) Priced the parts myself, considerably less expensive than the shop's prices, but am curious what comes with the deal. Anybody ever bought a "control arm shaft kit" from Auto Zone?

You need to get ahold (i.e. rent) a press to put the ball joints in the control arms. And yeah, that's really overpriced for parts. Now if they threw in a allignment and stuff for free, maybe. My dad and I could get that job done on a sunday. And as for finnesse, make sure you have a dead-blow hammer.

I'm in the process of installing a rubber front end rebuild kit from www.p-s-t.com on my SWB frame. Kit was $189 from PST and the local auto parts store will press in the lower ball joints for $5.00 a side. It sounds like that shop is really soaking you for the parts.
You can do this job in an afternoon like Peregrine said. |
