I remember the first car dad drove that had the dimmer on the steering column......dang-near killed us all trying to get his foot up that high to dim the lights. Finally figured out that you have to take your shoe off first!

I can tell we have some people who have never driven a car old enough to have the dimmer switch on the floorboard.

I'm sure you haven't ever driven a vehicle with the starter switch on the floor then.

I drove one that had a wash/wipe button on the floor. You wouldn't have heard of it though 1972 Mk III Ford Cortina.

My Dad had cars that had foot controls for the wonderbar radio. They were fun! We used to have a Land Rover when I was a kid that had a push button starter below the dash but not quite on the floor. I did also have a hand crank for emergency starting. That was a neat old truck. The windshield wipers were just motors above the windshield and had to be turned on independantly. You could even operate them manually by hand. Lippyp I bet you've seen lots of old Land Rovers like that over there heh?

I owned a 1965 Series IIa 88" Landrover for a while, that still had the starter crank hole but no handle with it as the later starters were more reliable but the front pulley still had the dogs to engage the handle in, I think you could still operate the wipers by hand though. The floor panels weren't bolted down, the seats were I think from a Volvo and there was about half a turn of play in the steering box, the brakes used to play a little game called "guess which way am I going to pull today?" and it had an interesting home made exhaust but it was good fun.

Yah with ours the floor boards were removeable too. You could also just lift up the seat cushions and see the drive shaft below and the ground whizzing by. I recall being out in it with my dad one time and we hit a big snow drift in 4 wd and snapped a back axle. It happened more than once too. It was long drive home locked into 4 wheel drive dragging ourselves home because you couldn't drive it very fast like that. At least it had full floating axles and so no wheels fell off

I would Imagine that there would have been quite a lot of Land Rovers in Canada at one point what with your connections to the UK. I'm currently toying with getting a newer one as I need something large and four wheel drive to drag stuff down to our holiday home in France as you currently can only get to it in a 4x4. Just not sure about how comfortable it would be on a 900 mile journey each way

Now days they put so much stuff on the column I have a 99'jeepGC and it has a console shifter and every time I drive it I nearly tear the wiper switch off trying to put it in gear.LOL

Lippyp actually the old Land Rovers were not all that common but there were a few around. Even today I still see one every so often. Then as now it was much more likely to see a Jag, MG or Triumph. As for today I can go find a new Land Rover over at the Ford dealer a couple of blocks from where I work. I suspect They are a fine vehicle but can't say first hand. We personally own a 3rd gen 4Runner and couldn't be happier. It's a 1998 SR5 with the TRD options group so it has the electric locking rear diff and the big wheels and tires. You can take that thing anywhere and know you will make it back. It is very off road capable. It has good highway manners and I have personally taken it on 500 mile highway road trips with no complaints about comfort or ride. The best thing is you can find them now for under $20K Canadian with 100,000 Km or less on them. A Runner is hardly even broken in at 100,000 K

i like the floor operation better for the fact that when im going around a turn and someone meets me i have to take my hand off the wheel to operate the lights on a normal car..

I'm currently toying with getting a newer one as I need something large and four wheel drive to drag stuff down to our holiday home in France as you currently can only get to it in a 4x4.
