Who cares. Its beat up, and has bondo on some of the holes in it. Who would want it? And to top it off he has a "reserve" on it.

Naaa, you just have to paint the sucker with the exception of the lettering and the raised porton that surrounds the lettering.

One of the guys I worked with did this and it looked good for a while but then the paint started flaking off due to bad prep. But it looked very trick when it was new.

once the paint started to flake off that became a concern so he took the gate off but when it was just the "CHEVROLET" it was well above the tops of most cars due to the 10" lift but I think a full chrome tailgate would definitely be illegal.

No it wouldn't be Illegal, Look at some of the Tractor Trailers on the road where the whole back portion of the trailer is polished Aluminum.
England Trucking I think.

yeah but if I remember correct isn't the door stamped in a diamond pattern so that the light is reflected in a different angle instead of right back at you.

There are plenty made in the diamond plate, and plenty that look like mirrors.
The 'cowboy' step bumper in chrome would be more irritating than a tailgate. (cow boy bumper...like the one pictured, but the ones that are chrome)

Chrome can be prepped to where paint will stick, and there is special etching primer than can be used too. I saw it done on a 65 (IIRC) GMC. This sucker looked sweet. Chrome bumpers and grill, had chrome side pipes, craiger SS mags, short/step, painted a burgandy/maroon color...awsome truck.
