Question Rear Axle seals

Does anyone but me have a 70K-10 with a GM-2 rear axle ? I have to change the rear axle seals. It doesent seem too complicated according to the sevice manual any short cuts or easier ways to do this ? I know I have to drain fluid pull cover remove pinion shaft lock screw and pull pinion shaft, push axle shaft in toward center and remove C lock and pull axle shaft out, remove and install new seal.Seems simple right ?

Have one of those "Magnet on a stick" thingys around. Put sticky grease on the c clips when you put them back. Probably want to have some emory cloth to clean up the axle seal surface. Get the stuff that comes in a roll about 1.5 inches wide and get about 3 feet of like 200 grit and about 3 feet of super fine stuff, like 500 or 1000 grit.

Hve fun.

GM-2 ?
you mean 12 bolt ?
remove diff cover(1/2" socket)
remove brake drums
rmeove lockshaft lockset screw(pointing and threaded into the carrier from the pass side of truck, 7/16" wrench)
push out the lock shaft that the spider gears ride on, dont have to completely remove it, just enough so that when you push the axle shafts towards the pumpkin the C clips wil fall off the ends of the shaft

pull shafts and use end of the axle shaft to pry out the seals, use big socket to tap in new seals and then reassemble the same way it all came apart

sometimes i like to type, i dont consider it practice anymore- ive been typing for two years now and havent gotten any better, actually i got worse at it, i stil type with 3 or 4 fingers max just like since day 1 on this thing
,
good luck

The 12 bolt axle is very common. I have had problems buying the seals so I would suggest that you take one with you. Autozone and NAPA
carry them but for some reason they tend to give you the wrong seal. (Maybe you have good luck with your parts store).

Be sure and blow out/clean out your vent. If that gets plugged it will force grease out of the seals. You will want to look at your axles to see if the bearing surface is spalled or not. If it is you will want to replace the axle(s) and bearing(s).

Good luck!

Jim

Wink

Yes I checked the vent first hoping it would be the problem,A GM powertrain tech told me to look for this and he gave me the new vent ends to prevent something from nesting in the hose !Now if I could just find them !

I could read the seal # behind the axle Napa looked up the seals and crossed the # and came up with the same seal.So far so good I will find out more when I tear it apart!
