5 Lug Axel Swap

I know, I've read this on here before. But I can't remember. Can someone tell me how to use 71' 5 lug axels in a 67' rear again and what parts do I need.

you can't. the 71 rear end is 1.5 inches longer than the 67 rear end. you have to get your 67 axles re drilled for the 5 lug pattern or get replacement axles. i think someone said summit or one of the board dealers has them in stock but i'm not really sure. as far as re drilling the 67 axles, any reputable performance shop can tell whare you can have it done or they might offer the service themselves.

in about mid '70, they changed over to the wide axles. If you have an early 70 rear end, you either need spacers, or shortened axles to put 71-72 axles in it. If you have a late 70 rear end, just pop the 71-72 axels in and you are good to go! no mods necessary.

I had read something once before about using the backing plates, drums, shoes and break hardware off a 73+ truck to make up for the difference. Anyone know anything about this ?

I made a 3/4" spacer plate on each side of my rearend to work,I took and made a template out of cardboard.Then some 3/4"plate and them to fit inbetween the backing plate and rearend housing.I had access to plasma torch and such so it didn't cost me $$.You might try the template and take it to the machine shop and see how much it would be versus axle machining

There is a new set of 5-lug "conversion axles" on the parts board.

When converting a late '70 rear to '72 5 lug axles, will I have to change anything other that the axles/drums? Shoes? Wheel cylinders?

Yeah...you'll need new wheels too.
And oil...you'll need new oil too, I'm not even that cheap.






no, you won't need anything, althoguht some new seals would be a good idea, other than that, slap them in, put on the C-clips, bolt on cover with some black goo on it, and fill it up, install 5 lug drums, wheels and drop the jack.
