5 Lug Axel Swap

I know, I've read this on here before. But I can't remember. Can someone tell me how to use 71' 5 lug axels in a 67' rear again and what parts do I need.

Thanks

axles

you have to have (i beleve don't hold me to the mesurement) 3/8 of an inch cut off the ends and a new grove cut for the C clip or you could proably use c clip eliminators but they would still have to be cut. a man here in town had them done for 50.00 dollars but the machienist said it was hell on his tools and alot of cutters broken and if any one else wanted them done it would be more. you can get some strange axles with 5 lugs for 229.00 and they are better than stock and will hold alot more power with alot less trouble to convert then it is just a matter of picking up some 5 lug drums. ive though about this alot and i decided to go aftermarket but i also have a 496 bb stroker turning mine so i need the strength

Build spacers to go between the axle housing and brake backing plates to space the brakes out enough to line up with the newer axle. Several members here have done it. Just make damn sure to use a very good grade of bolts and locking hardware on the backing plates.

The 69 open rearend I just replaced had the stock 71/72 5 lug axles w/spacers for the brake backing plates. Worked fine. I replaced w/a posi unit I bought from another board member. There is room on the axle for the outter bearing to ride on. The 3/8-16 bolts were grade 8's w/lugnuts for spacers. I still have the rear end w/the axles no brakes or backing plates though, anyone interested?
