Post Stock interior mirror...mirror replacement?

I have a stock interior rearview mirror that is in perfect working order except the etching on the mirror (coating on back of glass that makes it a mirror) is bad...flaking, peeling, and just bad. as a result it doesn't 'mirror' well. i'd like to just replace the glass mirror...is this possible? i didn't see an obvious/easy way to remove/replace it.

i'd rather not replace the whole assembly if i can avoid it.

thanks in advance for any info...

I'm sure I can get a mirror cut for it..my problem is finding out how to remove/replace the glass...i'm not sure there's a way to remove it without destroying the encloser.

I replaced mine with one out of an old Caddy. ('68 Eldorado I think) It mounted onto the arm the same way, and is far better than the stock ones in these trucks.

I did a few in Chevelles. They are stuck in with adhesive and most times will break when removed. Of the 2 I did, one came out and one broke! DOH! Naturally it was the nice one that broke.

Warming up the rubber lip that surrounds the mirror helps. Place in sun or use hair dryer.

Your only choice that I know of is to successfully remove your glass and have it re-silvered. All the glass shops I checked do not have replacement mirror as it's not a flat piece, it's fat on one side and thin on the other.

If anyone knows of a place that re-silvers a mirror, let me know.

Good exampes of these mirrors show up on ebay every now and then. I'd just look for a good used one.

thanks for the replies and good information...

re-silvering a mirror...seems like you can get that from a hardward store or perhaps a craft store.
