12 bolt rear question
i have a 12 bolt 5 lug rear in my 71 chevy cheyenne, that has a bad carrier.
the locking bolt for the cross pin broke and it wallowed the pin hole out in the carrier. now i have another 12 bolt from a 70 model that is a posi and measures the same width from backing plate to backing plate. but its a six lug. can i use my old axles and brake drums in the new rear? is there anything to watch out for when changing the axles in the posi rear? can i mess up the springs or clutches changing out the axles ? any insights or comments on this swap would be appreciated. thanks, Tony

I know you can swap axles.

Some of the 70 rear ends have shorter axles than the 71's. If the axles are the same length you can swap them with the drums. Just measure both rear ends to make sure.

wow, that was quick, thanks for the replies guys!
but does anyone know if there is stuff to watch out for when changing axles on a posi? will springs and stuff go flying out when i pull the axles out of the housing? any steps to take to make it easier? thanks, tony

Nothing will fly out when you pull the axles.

If it is an Eaton Posi which was standard in the 1/2 tons than there may not be enough room to pull the c-clips out without removing the spring pack.
Once you pull the spider gear pin, you can look to see if there is room to pull the c-clips off of the axle. If there is not room, you will need to pull the spring pack and then things can fly! Jim |

c-clips
There is room. I installed a Eaton in my 71. Took the ring gear off my old carrier and installed on Eaton carrier. Plenty of room.
