Have to replace door locks.

Somebody tried to break into my truck by jammin a screw driver into my drivers side lock. All I have is a 5 year old Sony CD player that they would've got $5-10 at a pawn shop. Anyway how do I change the locks out?

Fairly easy to change out....

Remove the handles, arm rest, and panel.

The locks are held in place with a flat spring piece that can be pulled out. Be sure to put it back in with the flat side to the door.

Be a good afternoon job.

You don't need to change both door locks, just the broken one. Have a locksmith match the new lock cylinder to your existing key.

Yep, pretty easy to do. Should be able to get it done in an hour or 2. If that.

Generally when purchasing a new door lock they come in pairs.

Rekeying one at a locksmith would cost more than its worth. I use to do locksmith work and saw some of the prices charged.

Unless you want the Ignition and the doors to be the same key.

I agree. I bought a new set of door locks with a matching cylinder for the ignition. It will allow me to have one key for the doors and ignition. I think the set was about $25 from Chevy Duty. I seriously doubt a locksmith would re-key a lock any cheaper than that.

How much are the locks from GM? I searched the usual GM parts websites and couldn't find door lock cylinders. Are the Chevy Duty ones "GM"? They're pretty cheap at $17 for the set. Found a set at NAPA under the "Echlin" name for $30.

I don't know who makes them, but they are probably not real GM parts. They come in a clear plastic bag with no markings of any kind.

I pulled my lock cylinder and had a locksmith make a key for the cylinder, cost me like 7 bucks I think, pulling the cylinder was a 15 min job too. Peice of cake, pull the panel, disconnect linkage and slide the spring clip out and your done.

Last time someone tried that on my GM car i popped out the cylinder and brought it along with my key to the locksmith and he charged me $12 to reubuild it and that was in NYC... even if he charges you $25 thats still cheaper than popping apart TWO sides to make the doors keyed alike.
The other alternative is to go junkyarding and find a GM Vehicle with the door key still in thre with an external cover kind of key cylinder. Theryere all basically the same its the piece thats held on the back of the cylinder that is usually different but they all pretty much interchange

One reason I'm going ahead and replacing both is the orignal key is getting pretty worn and hangs up alot. Thanks for the info sounds like an easy job. I'll git'er down when the rain lets up around here.

All this talk about theft recently gave me the worst nightmare last night: These gangsta black thugs who had no business wanting my truck carjacked me, then i stole Red back but it was toast. I crawled outta bed at 3AM this morning to go check everything was all right......
If i get robbed tho i deserve it; half the time i dont even roll the windows up. My truck looks so bad most crooks wouldn't bother. Bad paint and poor body = theft deterrence
