going into town this morning my burb started to idle rough and then it just quit. i managed to get it started and limp home. exhaust was black. its all stock, i think its a quadrajet, anyway there is a fair amount of gas leaking onto the intake. im not a carb expert but im guessing its time for a rebuild or maybe just buy a new carb...im up for suggestions. if its new carb time ill want one that will bolt in no muss no fuss and will take the stock air cleaner.
then again maybe its not the carb...thanks for any help

Flooding is usally a sign of the needle valve sticking which can be caused by wear or dirt. If the carb ran good otherwise, I would suggest changing the carb filter, (inside the gas line fitting that screws into the carb). You will want to eliminate the possibility of dirt entering the carb before you replace it anyway. If it is dirt causing you the problem the old filter will show dirt deposits inside of it.

Sometimes the gas tanks rust inside and the rust is carried into the carb, also.

Sounds like needle and seat or stuck float, tap on the side of the carb and see if it quits running rough and leaking gas.

Yep, sounds like a piece of dirt between the needle and seat. My old fuel tank was rusted just like JimKshortstep4X4 says and the old 2bbl Rochester had a sintered bronze fuel filter at the carb and very fine rust would bypass it and gum up the float bowl and just like you mentioned it would be hard to start and fuel would appear on the top of the manifold. The hole in the carb body for the accelerator pump shaft was wallowed out also and allowed fuel to spill out on intake. Install a carb kit and also install a inline filter between the fuel pump and carb, and that should fix it.
