Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
I can tell you the specs; max distance from flywheel is .100'' per their instructions. Mine was at .250'' (quarter inch). No way to adjust unless its disassembled and the billet block is milled down .15''. Dont use it unless you can have it milled. If you need a small starter use something from a '95 smallblock; they are tiny. My 454 starter wieghs 10lbs!!!

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Got the 'burb all back together and have driven it around quite a bit today. I also cleaned the drip rail and resealed it as all the seam sealer was gone and its a little rusty up there.
My starter works perfectly, brakes seem to be holding together and the trans is shifting so life is good!! Put a new serpentine belt on the 454 just for fun!! Just shot a pic with all three in the driveway.....now I can finally get to the '64 shorty..........

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Thanks Dave......I did not feel like re-doing the flex plate but it turned out not being horrible. I spend time to get it right the first time and that starter was out of my control. However, I did learn about the stock starters from the newer engines and that was good. They are tiny and are geared low too.

i know that you haven't posted on this for a while, but I had to say that I think you have an awesome truck here and I loved reading about your updates and improvements to it. I also love the fact that you put the big block in it! Hope you are able to cruise around in it this year a lot! Keep up the great work on your trucks!

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Thanx man!! I forgot I posted this on here until Cornut brought up the thread. I had cleared out the 'burb to work in the garage and saw them lined up like this; thought 'that would be a good pic' and shot it!!!

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
I've done enough wrenching!! I want to drive them! I will be doing some sanding, however.

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Started sanding the roof of the 'burb. Damn it's huge!!! I picked up some Werner aluminium platforms to stand on and reach the top of the truck. I looked into some new (old) body parts and have come up with a plan for prime/paint. I am working on this truck, and as I paint various parts, I will also get parts ready off the '64 shorty and paint them as well. Two pronged assault!! Here's a pic of the white dust.........

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Looks like progress man!! I hate sanding. I spent my afternoon welding rivet holes and sanding paint on some panels I have here. I'd much rather be doing fab work instead.
Those Werner platforms are the cat's ass!! I bought a couple of those on sale a few years ago (right after I finished my Suburban as a matter of fact). I have used those for so many things and recommend them to everybody. Looks good man!!

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Ok, sanding is boring but I did make it thru quite a bit and have more in my future. Wiped the top down for some small dings and scratches; need to sand. I have been rounding up parts for the 'burb and got a new grill support. Spent most of today cleaning it up and knocking a few dents out of it...ended by rust treating the back of the panel. Drivers side fender is going to get a patch panel and dug out my pass fender. I was going to make this thing live again but have decided on a repop with this one donating the grill section. I think there is one thing I cant repair and dont want to put more time into it. I have enough to do on the whole truck.
Also picked up a new column to rebuild so I can get rid of the 73+ tilt that I hate in there. More updates tomorrow.

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Made some more progress today....took off the drivers side fender and all the bolts came out!! Had to grind thru the front and hit the bottom bolt with lube but was amazed when it finally let go. 3lbs of dirt fell out, too. This one will get a patch panel and needs some work on the brace; not much. Also found some marks on the cowl vent cover; factory marks?? Dont know but I dont think that fender had been off before. Everything is in good shape with the exception of a hacked up spot from a speaker in the kick panel. Also pulled off the passenger fender. Musta weighed 40lbs with all the bondo!! It was done in the 'cave it and pave it' style of bodywork. Time to make some pieces and soon start welding.

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
A little more progress today. Took the drivers side fender out to give it a workover. I washed it and degreased it first. Ground out the paint and found it wasnt too rotten after all. It had been filled with bondo down in the brace area we all know. I was happy that I could section out a piece of the patch panel and not have to weld all across the fender. I need to fix the brace as its crusty but it will stay.
I also decided to put the '64 C-10 emblems back on the truck. I had one and picked up another off a '64 'burb btw. Also hiding in the box is a new 'counterfit' pass fender. Looks Im going to be busy next weekend, too. Anyone know how to clean paint overspray off chrome?? One emblem has some and Id like to shine it up.

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Try a rag soaked in laquer thinner to remove the paint over spray.
I'm going to have go back and catch up on this one... Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Cool; I'll try it. I looked at my aluminum polish and it said not to use it on chrome. Thought about steel wool, too. Just dont want to scratch it up too badly.

Re: 1964 Suburban Pics
Didnt have any thinner so after cyphering for a spell, I decided to use some rubbing compound and it worked. The chrome is still good so I used a razor knife to scrape the paint off like cleaning glass. Then I just rubbed the crap out of them and they polished up nicely.
