Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Randy,

RE: idle roughness

Probably not an issues, could do a leak down test on cylinders, and could check all valves are working correctly by checking valve lift as you crank over ( cam or broken spring). Rule out cam and cylinder issues.

Probably have done, check ignition voltage, are you getting good color spark, on all plugs.

What does a vac guage look like at idle?

Just a few things I thought of to consider.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

I guess I don't see how air can get into the fuel system like that. The fuel pump should force the air out into the float bowl with the incoming fuel. Then the system is purged of air...how does air get back in? Unless the air backfeeds through the needle and seat because the pump isn't pumping enough and the bowl level is drawn down below the seat. I'm not saying that is 100% what happens, but its just my simple logic.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

I'm going to change all the rubber hoses, I found one from the pump to the line that was rotted and leaking could be sucking air. It did the same thing with the old carb. Except now it doesn't have hesitation ate half throttle. So any who I'll eventually get it figured out. Thanks for all yalls input and help..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Well after installing the HEI the engine is still having issues not running smoothly at idle, I got my brother to look at it and he said he didn't think that #3 cylinder wasn't firing, so I changed the plug to see if that would help and it didn't, so I started with the valves, started at #1 and loosened it until it really was clapping then tightened till it stopped and went through all the cylinders and it seemed to help some but it still has like a dead miss, so tomorrow after church I'm going to do a compression check Oh and it makes a noise in the front part of engine kinda hard to explain, my brother seemed to think it might be a wrist pin.. I have no idea, it even ran really smooth before I replaced the cam. I'm assuming the cam I put in it was stock. I may have to go through this engine after all or take a look see with the other 292 I have I do know that it runs, I wished it wasn't getting dark early and wished I had a garage I would get that other 292 ready to run hooked up to a radiator and see how it does.. Yada Yada Yada...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Well went out there and changed the plugs and checked the gaps as I took them out and a couple were way off so after new plugs it does run better but still has a noise coming from engine.. Oh well aint it always something..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Yea I actually bought the truck 3 yrs ago in Dec. around a week before Christmas..I'm sure I'll have plenty of bugs to work out.. I still have some rust above the windshield area then that will be all rust gone..then I can concentrate on the rest, oh forgot about the doors, oh well that'll keep me busy for a while.... But yea being able to drive it some will boost my motivation, Lord knows I got all kinds of things that need hauled to the dump..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

well I took the ole truck on it's maiden voyage, went to put gas in her, I still have to get an inspection atleast I had tags and Ins. she was very slow and sluggish I guess I'm going to have to check the timing I just kinda tuned be ear...cause the timing mark on the balancer is off guess it's slipped over time... I knew I was going to have some bugs to work out, man if that engine doesn't do any better than that then I might have to re-examine the power train...especially if she's going to be drinking the gas....

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

10 degrees initial should be good for that engine. I remember having the single barrel on mine.....pulled quick in 2nd.....full throttle in 3rd..... And we were up to speed by 4th. It'll have better power when you fine tune it. And if that still isn't enough......well......we can talk about nitrous.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

you crack me up T.J. Nitrous really.. any who looks like I'm going to be getting some much needed fill dirt for the rear of my property I have about 40 to 50 feet that's useless, If I get that filled in I can put up another poor man's garage, what I mean by that is a carport garage.. what would be really nice is a concrete floor this time...and electricity...
that would be nice, then I will have a place where I can paint my truck myself....working out side in the dirt is for the birds...LOL....it really sucks having only 1 income...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Randy,

Great news you had first outing.

Sure the 292 will get some power soon, lots of owners really like them. Down the road how about a leak down test if still need to work of tuning. Enough timing at lower RPMs can make good power.

I would go for twin turbos, maybe some are getting big HP in South America with this set up.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Les, yea once upon a time a had a compression checker, might be buried in my building, But I don't think there too expensive, I'll check that if it ever quits raining here even though it's in the low 60's.. No garage is the pits....looking forward to spring to start on something else on the truck whether it be the doors or inside of cab, I'm going to have to pull the windshield to fix rust above it. atleast I can be driving it...a work in process... maybe one Turbo but two might be over-kill.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Randy,
Starting with one turbo is ok, you will get hooked and need another one soon.

I like the leak down tester vs compression because you can learn a lot more about your rings and valves with it. However, it does require around 100psi of compressed air to get a good reading. Also, maybe, find another truck/ car guy who has one. Engine/ racers guys are likely to have one you could use at their place.

Back on turbos, one of my first exposures to them was at the track on fun night, maybe a 66 or 67 Baracuda with 318 engine and home made dual turbos owner/ driver had made. Looked really crazy, but also so crazy fast. Car was all engine, and no suspension to handle the power once it came on. Would never race him because he was all over the track going down 1/4 mile. He also hand changed his street tires to slicks with a bar in the pits and wore a stocking hat even when it was 90 degrees. All this took place at 75-80 drag way in MD.
