I agree Rian. I read people's build threads before I go to work in the morning and usually read them when I get home.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Stripped my passenger door yesterday. Found some stuff I really didn't want to but that's how these old trucks are. Surprises around every corner. The front corner is rotten. That is a relatively easy fix. It appears the door check broke at one time and the door was allowed to swing to far and crease the door. The body man that fixed pulled some of the dent and then filled over with a 1/4" bondo. I swear I ground at least a quart of bondo off this door.
So I will have to cutout the two creases and weld in some new metal. There is also a crease running down the bottom middle of the top curve part. Not sure I can really do anything with this and it is not that deep so will probably just fill over it. Does any of this look familiar Rian? 20150207_113752 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150207_113741 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150207_113746 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150207_113757 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Looks like an ANGRY BADGER was riding shot gun and beat the hell out of the bottom of the door. I am really curious how this even happened as the original rocker had no damage in this area? Was going to bang this out from the inside since there is a speaker hole but there is another panel behind it so no access. Probably just cut it out at the edge and then hammer the edge square and weld in a new piece. 20150207_125046 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Also the door check area is beat up as well. Must have been a violent wind whipped the door or something who knows! 20150207_125100 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
What have you decided about the doors, are you going to re-skin them up to the window frame?

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
My current plan is to make some wooden pucks that match the profile of the two outer areas I need patches for. Make some patches and then trace them out over the damaged area cut out and weld in the patches. I don't really want to replace the whole door skin. I found a tool online that I might be able to use to push the crease out from the inside.

Thanks for the offer John. I really don't want to replace the whole skin. Will see how I do on it.

Couple of rounds of high build and blocking on the back and she will be ready for some paint.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Its basically a 1/2" bar with a right angle at the end with a rubber tip. They are pretty expensive. I may try to make one myself. I watched several videos on youtube of PDR and guys using them on newer cars. But they have thinner metal so not sure it will work on the older metal. Will find out.

looks easy compared to what you done but if your budget will allow it there are some straight doors over in the parts forum,

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Man my thread was back on page 4. I have been slacking. Had some truck time today and also spent about 4 hours talking truck with 66customcab. Studied a lot of things on his truck to see how they came from the factory. Got a real good idea of where to tape off on the front grill for the white, black and blue. I also discovered I have a Custom cab bench seat by the extra springs mine has. Same as his. Very cool getting to meet him and his truck today.
After he left cleaned the shop real good and started masking off the white and getting ready to spray the Midnight Blue. Very excited. It was 60* today and this coming week we have 3-4 days we are suppose to hit 70* so I want to have the bottom part of the cab ready to go. Unmasked everything and pleasantly surprised to have no overspray of white onto the California Suede Metallic. 20150307_160530 by bjohnson388, on Flickr The masking tape I bought is pretty awesome. Even for an amateur like me I got really good crisp lines. And the tape is see through which I didn't understand and first but now I do. It lets you see the previous tape line easy to see when you are masking to spray the second color. Awesome. 20150307_160557 by bjohnson388, on Flickr I also got the back cab wall sanded so I can reshoot it. 20150307_160610 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150307_164814 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Also had a bonfire and burned all the tree trimming from a couple weeks ago. Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
A quick question on the primer. Does everyone sand the primer everywhere before applying the base coat or SS?

Ron
The sealer primer shot right before color has to be wet. I let it flash for about 15 min before the color

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I know everyone is probably tired of seeing primered pics but these are the last ones. I shot 2 coats of high build and fixed a bunch of little pinholes and bad places with glazing putty yesterday. It is suppose to hit 69* today. Just need to block and wipe down and shoot some BLUE!!!
There are a few places at the bottom where the original gas tank brackets were pulled out that I didn't get perfect but you will never see these once the bed is on there. 20150310_141939 by bjohnson388, on Flickr I am very proud of my rocker replacement. Not too bad for an amateur. 20150310_141931 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Back of the cab looks straight in this picture.
