Re: mylow53 build
wow man, you have one helluva truck there. It's awesome to see you getting the kids involved too.
i was looking at your header setup and was trying to figure out what headers you went with. I have a 50 that will be running the same mustang II setup with bags and a SBC. I'm doing some shopping and was wondering if you could give more info on the specific headers you selected and how well the fit inside and above the frame rails. |

Re: mylow53 build
headers that's an issue here i originaly bought a set of Doug's headers not sure what model but i had to clearance the frame. since most of the frame in the front is boxed i think it's strong enough. i still think these are too tight to the frame. i would suggest the smaller hugger headers or sandersons manifold to guarantee a fit.

Re: mylow53 build
ok i know it's been a week or so but I'm pretty busy at work so the truck has to wait!!!. anyhoo i've been messing with the hood alignment. i've replaced the drivers hinge since it had too much slop. while i had it off i wallered out all the holes on the drivers side. and grinded down any part of the hinge that would limit the rearward movement. so much so that the ends hinge arms had to be trimmed slightly to clear the cab. put it all back together and still a bit of a gap on the left side of the hood... but i have it shutting much better. also noticed the power steering was leaking. spoke to brian on the billet specialties tech line and he said i need to bleed the power steering system. he also mentioned that the directions spelled out the correct procedure to remove the air from the system. he believes the air is forcing out the fluid so fast under power that it shoots out the cap.... i guess i should have read those directions...

Looking good Greg--
Nice work, the hoods can be a real challange to get the fit right. If you are not careful you will be driving that thing soon. How fun would that be????? Marc |

I'm no bodyman, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express I've read somewhere recently where people have shimmed the front cab mounts to correct the hood gap. It works by tilting the front of the cab upward in relation to the rest of the sheetmetal. It's hard to tell for sure by your pictures, but seems that could possibly correct your gaps since they seem to spread wider the further down the gap you go.

Re: mylow53 build
If you go with collectors insurance make sure you look at the restrictions (when and how much you can drive) that can affect or cancel coverage. I drive my 64 Chevelle as my primary car and could not qualify for collector insurance based on when I drive it (times besides holidays, weekends and to and from events) and mileage (over 6K per year). I've talked to my agent about my truck and when its finished I can get a stated value policy with an appraisal. The Chevelle's value is less than 10K so stated value is not an option (its a survivor that needs restoration).

Re: mylow53 build
Well I can drive my car everyday and go on power tours and do all I built the car for. I don't have to worry about the miles I drive or anything like that. All I have to do is not use the car as my primary transportation and keep it in the garage at night. These things I would do anyway. I did not build the car to go to work and leave it in a parking lot, or to go shopping. I built the car for cruising, making a couple of trips a year, and car shows and all that is covered under my insurance. It depends on what you built you truck for. I would have never build something as nice as you built to use as a daily driver. My classic cars are just hobby cars. It you go with standard insurance its just and old car to them and they will try that book value crap. You put a lot of time and money in your truck and you want an agree upon value insurance. Judging from your work and time put in you did not build a daily driver (what I mean by daily driver is something you need to get around).

thanks guys i did try to call aig but they shot me down. i want to drive this believe it or not. i know what i put in to this and i want to use this truck, maybe not as primary but 10 k a year would be nice. I already put 30 k on the 03 diesel. the agreed on value would work for my regular insurance but i need to get an survey of the truck and i can't seem to find one around T.O (Thousand Oaks) let me give grundy a call GT

Re: mylow53 build
ok I'm still working on some small issues. i've ordered some dnya matt. it's actually from fat man so it's a different make but the same effect. mind you i should have done this earlier but what else is new. Also i wanted to bounce an idea off you guys. i've been thinking about my wiper motor. and i don't like the replacement electric. especially the switch which looks like it came from an s-10. i want to use my working original vacuum wiper motor since i live in so cal and don't expect to drive in the rain. i've head there are after market electric vacuum pumps out there that would help with the brakes, if you had a race cam in. what if i connected this to my original wipers. this way i would maintain the original switch and be able to drive uphill in the rain.
comments?

Re: mylow53 build
if this is fat mat you bought it is ok but not nearly as good as dynamat exteme. I have used both and the dynamat is quite a bit thicker. I ended up using 2 layers of fat mat. so there went my cost savings.

Re: mylow53 build
i did get some work done this weekend i was able to install the original stainless emblem on the hood. i didn't have all the mounts for this but jimmy from jim carters trucks sold me some used ones for a buck a piece. i never knew they used something other than a bolt thru the hood to hold them. it had some sorta stud and clip arrangement. regardless i drill those out and inserted a 1/4" bolt and welded the head of the bolt to the mount and presto something that will actually stay mounted... also installed the original vacuum wiper and new arms...
as far as the fatman sound deading i am pretty sure this will be a loud truck no matter what i use. sent off the check for the grundy insurance today and i hope they approve my 10k miles requirement. most only allow 2500 miles a year. and this afternoon i need to find some one to install an exhaust system anyone have any favorites in my area?

Re: mylow53 build
what did you do about cutout on the back of the hood emblem where the strip went thru it? did you fill it somehow? I have Hagerty insurance and they have no mileage restrictions.
