Re: Dumptruck Dolly
I worked on a problem with my steering today. The mechanism was hitting the leaf springs on a hard turn. The power steering sector was off of my ‘71 K20.

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
I went back to the donor truck (Blue Beast), and made the manual steering sector work on Dolly. No power steering, but full turning will happen.

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
My son, Trevor, pressure washing the bottom of the cab. Finley is always in on the action. I am going to undercoat the cab. Repairs to the cab will be done later. So, here’s a before and after...

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Also worked on removing a leaky pinion seal on the rear end. There are no leaks at the third member that I just swapped. After applying the heat wrench and using a 3 foot cheater pipe, I got things apart. Off to the parts store tomorrow.

Finn is 2 years old... Hope to finish up the pinion seal Friday. Then I’ll line up the two piece driveshaft and locate the crossmember and carrier bearing...then I think I can put the cab back on... Last edited by fishnixon; 09-24-2020 at 06:53 PM. |

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Had problems with the threads on the pinion...I had to buy a dye and redo the threads...kind of a long delay. Got it fixed and put the driveshaft in from the K20 donor. Matching gears and connecting the front to the back feels good.

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
I’m back...the accumulation of smaller items is getting Dolly closer. The fan, accelerator rod linkage, alternator brackets with a new alternator, power steering pump and steering box with new belts, are all back on.
I was able to figure out why “at first” the power steering box didn’t work...it was a problem with my front tire alignment. All that fiddling around created a waste of time, but with a bonus of gaining a little more knowledge as a positive result. Last edited by fishnixon; 12-01-2020 at 10:32 PM. |

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
The 4 speed Z bar clutch mechanism was a little problem initially. I couldn’t connect the tube that goes between the block and the frame mounting bracket because my Doug Thorley Header wouldn’t allow for the angle I needed. I wasn’t going to take the header off for the 5th time! My choices were to remove the motor mount bolt and jack up the motor or to cut the rivets off the bracket on the frame, assemble the Z bar and bolt the bracket back down. I chose the latter and it wasn’t too bad of a fix. That’s done!

I'm glad that you're still at it. It's coming along nicely.

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Thanks
I had to locate another pair of valve covers as the ones I had painted were too tall for the brackets of the alternator setup I had. One of my parts trucks came through. Now I “have” to get another set of 327 stickers. Last edited by fishnixon; 12-04-2020 at 08:37 AM. |

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Time to put the fuel tank in...I have about 1/3 of fuel in the tank. This tab was a formidable foe as I tried to get the tank over it while the gas filler was in position. Geez...

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Fuel line from a V8 (now the smaller 6 cylinder fuel line is in the parts bin)...hooked up a 90 degree 3/8 inch line on the front, and added some bling for the fuel line hook up under the cab as it was all I had left in 3/8 inch.
