Re: mylow53 build
so i've been putting some miles on this and i have just under 2k since the speedo was fixed. i've been trying to take it to work in Hollywood once a week. it's really interesting to see the reactions. most people don't take much notice. some honk, some rev there engine.. and some take pictures. I stopped in malibu for some coffee. and this guy took a picture himself standing next to the truck... 4 separate times. I wanted to charge admission! then I was driving home this past saturday and this guy in an el camino was giving me the thumbs up. he then passed me while the passenger was taking pictures on his cell phone. and oops the wind knocked his cell out of his hand.. he was doing 70 so i don't think the phone survived... i guess i can take this as complements. but i've figured out the truck is the star and I'm just along for the ride

You got that right.lol It is nice when people notice your ride. I get the same thing when I'm in the 55 Sedan. Although one lady called me a dummy because I did not know I had a Cadillac.lol She knew because her father had one just like it when she was a kid.lol

Re: mylow53 build
ok i pulled the rear out this weekend. i think i mentioned before how the rear was howling at 50. when you were just trying to maintain 50 mph on flat ground there was the old truck sound... so i spoke to mark at coast driveline http://coastdriveline.com he told me that the 373 gears i had him install originally are notorious for being loud. in-fact he mentioned that most gear manufactures don't make them. So mark told me he would swap out my gears for a set of 3:50 gears for 300 bucks... this would lower my rpms and he can guarantee a quite rear-end... me and the boy pulled the rear out sunday. I'm happy to report i was able to keep all of my fingers. man that thing is heavy and awkward! so here are some picts

Re: mylow53 build
Hhmmmmmmm, that is the first time I have heard that one, "notiorous for being loud".
Is the noise only at one speed, and he says it is the gear set. Funny he did not mention that when you had them installed.

Re: mylow53 build
it's hard to say since i had my installer purchase the rearend. i thought it was strange as well since i have a dodge truck with a quite 3:73 as well. it could be that the ford 9" has issues with gear size (smaller diameter gears than my dodge). Mark kept referring this gear as a former nascar ratio. I'm no specialist when it comes to this i do know i trust this guys reputation. the noise by the way was most notable at 50 but could be heard by my transmission guy from 40 to 70...

Re: mylow53 build
Has he seen the rear end yet, and had a chance to look at the back lash on the ring gear? I really like the 3:73 ratio as it is just right around town and the sweet spot at 70 mph is just right in 5th gear. You will like the 3:55 also especially on the highway.
You don't have many miles on that gear set so have him look at the adjustment and the pattern on the gears, If this was a NEW ring and pinion ask him what brand he used. Ford 9" are pertty bullit proof if set up rignt.

Re: mylow53 build
ok the rear is back! picked it up yesterday and asked mark what oil to put in. this of course started a 20 minute sermon on the type of oil that should only be used in a rear. on any car... I'm sure we could start our own blog on just oil... so please don't yell at me if you don't agree with mark... with that said mark wants me to only run 80-140 GL5 oil in his rear... he said the only synthetic you should run comes from nasa and cost's 200 bucks a quart. something about a 10 strand molecule vs a 3 strand in most other synthetics. he went further to say he measured the heat from a synthetic oil rear and the same rear with his oil in it, to be much cooler... no matter ill do what I'm told. I figure i asked for the best to work on my truck i better take there advise!

Re: mylow53 build
Did you change gear sets?
Did you use the same brand of gears. I am sure if he is in the business he knows how to compensate for noise and ware. Brake them in right and they will last forever

Re: mylow53 build
yes we change it over to a 3:50 which he guarantees will be quiet. im going to try and install this this weekend. you guys think i could bench press this in. it's not like i could have a spotter under the truck. I don't think i could set this gear on my chest without some rib dammage...
he didn't mention a breakin procedure what do you guys do?

i'm pretty sure the old 3:73 is only good as a paper weight now (he kept it). agreed on the jack!

Re: mylow53 build
Here is a tip for you. When you put that back in, make sure you don't drag it across your stud bolts like I did a few years ago. It is heavy enough it will flatten your threads on your stud and you will be using a die or a thread file to try to restore the studs so you can get the nuts back on.

Re: mylow53 build
I've heard some guys sat to take it easy for the first 500 miles. I didn't with the 373's so I'm going to try it this time.
I did get the monster back in and no injurys except a sore back. I can tell the diffrence it is much nicer to drive. I'm sure the gear will effect my 0 to 60 time. But this ain't no racer it's way too heavy! GT
