Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????

Yep, I think you are on the right track. Now it's onto the details like the number and spacing of slats, maybe throw in some light radiuses on corners and ends, and the copper pipe idea has potential too.
Seldom a design/build project goes from start to finish without several changes along the way, but that's the fun part, right? Keep us posted.

Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????

[QUOTE=66clow;5534483]Update on DIY roof RACK. Worked on putting on the T for the cross supports. Much sturdier and looks better. There was too much space between the roof and the bars. Used glue and screws. Thinking of using copper piping for the side rails for something different, what you think? ????

Slats mounted, came out pretty good. Errors made but OK. Need to add rails and stain. Will do a final redo in oak. Has been fun playing around with it.

Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????

Could use two more slats at each extremity, radius them at the front and back to follow the roof line.

Good idea, I'll try that. I know it needs some type of different lines somewhere. I just couldn't picture it. After fooling with all the straight line slats that's all you see after a while. Still open to other ideas . Glad I'm using the really cheap wood so the final deal should be error free with the oak wood. So far I probably have about $60 in it including the cost of the C.L. brackets. Not bad for a trial run.

Made some cuts, hope this was what you where referring to. Plan for rails and probably a oak stain??. Will for back and use real oak wood for final rack.

Mounted the rails and polished them. Not looking forward to taking it apart to stain.

Very cool! Are you doing just a stain or a rustic stressed look? Either way, this looks too cool. The side rails look just right the way they are. Nice work!

BTW, I love your truck. Patina and all!

Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????

Okay I like but How about spraying the copper with aluminum paint or fast forward time some how and get the copper to turn that green color. To me the copper reminds me of a construction site or something. Sorry, just being honest. However your truck is KILLER looking and I like your style, Mike

Okay I just took a 2nd look, its not at all bad looking, great idea and project. The whole idea of a rack is great, nice work. Your talented

Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????

Thanks for all the advice. I'm totally open to ideas. Sometimes you get tunnel vision and can't see other options. But now with all the ideas I'm not sure which way to go. Didn't think about stressing the wood. That may go along with everything else. Also thought about tinting the wood. I like the idea about aging the copper possibly. Decisions decisions. I could just do 10 different ones and pick one.

I like the aged wood look. It will match the storage box in the truck that you displayed in another thread. Ageing the copper with a patina would also look nice.

Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????

I used to do copper roofing and was told that in the old days, to match the patina on the church roofs that were under repair, they would spray the copper with horse urine. Another story was the tinsmiths would pee in a bucket and then use the contents to spray on the copper to age it. My nephew used to pee out his bedroom window onto the copper clad bow window beneath, instead of using the bathroom next to his room. It took us awhile to figure out why that section of the roof was going green faster that anywhere else the copper had been applied. Kid's!

on Trucks! they showed some plant food that you can spray on copper to age it, I'm pretty sure it was one of the ClasSix episodes.

Uh think I may look into Trucks episode to age the copper before I start peeing on my rack. My wife really will think I've lost my mind fooling with the truck. I can see it now everyone touching the rails saying that is soo cool and then I telling them how I aged it.

Dude I started thinking something was wrong with the air up there until I came across this link.
http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load...243215520.html

It refers to brushing on some urine. Also talks about miracle grow, I'm not a gardener so no need to waste money there. Also talks about vinegar and salt, I'm not a cook. You might be on to something. Between you and me I may give it a try. Just don't say anything to Georgia guys around here they will never invite me to there get together. They will never know how i did it. Thanks for help!!!
