Re: Lookin for a 4 speed... need help deciding

I don't have the stock Bell housing. I have one out of a 72 nova.

I can't help you there.

If it had a three speed and the bell housing cross member is still there you would be better off using the original '67 bell housing and clutch linkage and just bolting the 4 speed on to that.

Just my 2¢ worth

That would've been nice. Would have saved me some money. And time.

Powder coated and rebuilt Muncie with an iron mid plate.

I don't remember where I purchased it from. Summit Racing, maybe?

Re: Lookin for a 4 speed... need help deciding

I would stay away from an M21 and M22 with a 3.08 gear set. First gear ratio is 2.20 in either one so you would be a dog off the line. M20's first gear ratio is 2.56 so that isn't as bad. I had a 69 SS Chevelle with a built 427 in it with an M-22. I had 4.56's in it and decided too try a 3.73 geared rear I had laying around for better cruising. Well, that flat out sucked off the line so I wound up putting in some 4.10's which was better... Find yourself a Super t-10 out of a mid to early 80's Z-28 camaro... I ran one for a while that had a 2.64 first gear ratio.. Tire size plays a big role...

With 3.08 rear gears I doubt it would pull the sheets off the bed.

I have 373 gears. I'm going to give it a shot. Wish me luck.

67chevy_hotrod was trying to get the scoop on installing a 4 speed with 3.08 rear gears and Tom hijacked his thread thus the confusion.

Re: Lookin for a 4 speed... need help deciding

They had a close ratio 4-spd option on these trucks called the New Process 435CR (M-28) which is a massive and very durable transmission comparable to the 465.

First gear is still pretty deep at 4.56-1 but with your 3.07 gears you would be able to use 1st gear especially with tall tires.

Gear spacing is pretty good.

I've got a 3.73 rear dif and 31" tires and I still use 1st gear if I'm starting on an incline or I have a load. Yours would be even more useful (with the taller gears), maybe up to 30-35MPH? But even starting in 2nd it seems like a very good "3 spd". that doesn't have that big jump to 3d that the 465 has.

Probably not what you are looking for, but good to know anyway I guess.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread. Lesson learned.
