Thanks but wait until you see the one I am going to do for a 34ish Roadster Pick-Up I will be starting in a few months. It will have tubular upper and lower arms and I will be building my own mounting clip that will also be full tubular

Re: LFD's 41 chevy Project "Fill-in"

What's your time frame for a build like this? I have been looking for a good truck for so long I may end up just having one built. Oh yeah...what's the goin rate for a restore on a 72 truck back to semi stock?

Great build. Love your work.

Re: LFD's 41 chevy Project "Fill-in"

Been working on the 41 again after waiting for parts.
It is on the ground for the first time tonight and everything looks great. I have 2" of clearance under the chassis when it is aired out and everything turns and rolls great. I have the tanks and both comps plumed and set to turn on at 90psi and shut off at 140psi. The only flex lines in the system are the ones that came pre mounted to the pumps, other than that it is all 3/8" and 1/4" steel bent and flared to fit. So far tonight it has been holding at 138 for the last few hours so we will see how it is in the morning. The rear bags are plumbed and the fronts are still in need of some tube for the bags and brakes and I will work on that Thursday. As soon as the bags and brakes are set I will remove all the wires from the firewall and set the cab back in place for the trans tunnel mock up and steering joints along with the 67-72 tilt column I have for it. Things should be looking good here real soon.

Here are a few pics of it laid out.

Re: LFD's 41 chevy Project "Fill-in"

Well today I finished up the air system with the front hard lines to the bags and all lines ended at the fire wall and ready for routing into the cab. I also got the adjustable proportioning valve mounted and the rear and drivers front line ran. I will do the pass front line once I pull the motor and then I can drill and tap all the line mounts to the frame at the same time. I am running manual paddle valves in this from AVS and I was really pleased with how fast they inflate for a 1/4" system. I get 8" of overall lift out of the system and I am really looking forward to the first test drives in this truck. I set the cab back on the chassis so I can start the floor board mods to clear the trany hump and smooth off the firewall once I decide were all the wires will hide and A/C will run and what not. Also it will be getting a 1 piece hood that will open in the front so I need to build the hinges and the hood support for everything to mount to. Once the truck is ready to run and drive I will pull it all back apart and send the chassis off to powder coat and paint the misc parts. Then since I will have every system complete and sitting on the shelve it will go back together real easy with minimal work, I hope

Got room for another observer? Thoroughly enjoy watching craftsmen at work. And I luv the older GM trucks as much or more than the 67-72 but boy they are hard to find now days used to have a 35 and wish I had kept it! I'd probably trade my Harley for a 37!

Re: LFD's 41 chevy Project "Fill-in"

when you use a flex like you did with the exhaust does that allow you to mount the muffle solid or does it serve a different purpose?

Yes for the most part you can mount solid from that point back. On this one I still used a flex type of hanger but several of them pulling in different directions to really hold it in place. They also help keep header flange leaks down to a minimum.

Not as low as your little boys F**D but it still looks pretty SICK! You make it all look so easy! I'm glad I don't live to far I can come check out the progress in person! Keep up the good work Kevin. What a difference between this setup and the death trap subframed stock chassis it came to your house on! Later

Re: LFD's 41 chevy Project "Fill-in"

A bit more hood work today. I started by removing the center hinges and then tack welding the hood to the truck to hold its shape and placement. Then the tig welding started all 6+ feet of it. After the welding was done and some of the hammer work roughed in as well I started on the second skin for the new hinge mounts. In the morning I will turn the flat second skin into a structural piece that will allow the hinges to be mounted to it and give the hood some much needed rigidity.

Re: LFD's 41 chevy Project "Fill-in"

The hood looks great, did you fill the gap of the hinge with a flat strip?
I also welded my hood(38 pickup) together but that did not came out that well.
After some struggling and patching it with a new piece of flat metal i got it straight now.

Could you make a closeup of the weld?
A have another truck(42 pickup) waiting that i want to do the same thing on.
But I'd rather do it right the first time.

What I did was rolled the 90* hinge mount back to flat the then over lapped the two sections of the hood back on the truck. I then scribed the line I wanted to cut and just but welded them together. This way I only had 1 weld to do, as were if I added a strip I would have 2 welds the length of the hood. Now this only works if the hood is in great shape. If it has already started to crack along that edge then you are out of luck because it will keep cracking once you are done.

Re: LFD's 41 chevy Project "Fill-in"

Not finished yet with the hood bracing but it is getting close and this will give you the idea of what I am doing. I made the hinges along with a friend of mine who needs the same set up for his 45. So I designed them and he built the hinges (2 sets) and in return I will make his bracing for his hood. I have already 1 pieced his hood for him.

So I made a mounting brace then the hinges mount to under the dash and a sheet metal brace for the hood. I will make a few more braces for the hood that will run front to back along the sides to take the stress of the gas struts. I used 2 gas struts under the dash out of a 2000 explorer hood hinge. They only have 2 1/4" of movement but are super strong and seem to work real well.
