Subscribed .. tell me more on the Easy Off oven cleaner. Would it clean up my upper belt line trim as well? Does it just strip off the old anodizing so you can polish the underlying aluminum (or whatever .. ? ) Then re-paint what needs to be black ?

My '69 insert does have one of the egg crate squares that is cracked. Not a big deal. Nobody but me would notice. The biggest thing, though is that I think the insert is held on by rivets, which means I'd need to drill out the rivets on both sets of grills, and then buy some new rivet/screws from brothers. If I just replace the whole thing and leave it in tact, it'll be much easier. That's how I got the grill off the truck at the junk yard

That's what I've heard, but you better be real careful, or it'll eat the paint off your truck.

I just bought some of the oven cleaner last night, so I plan to work on this today

Turns out I was wrong about something. The inner grill does not connect with rivets. It connects with bolts, so I was easily able to remove it from my new grille, which is making the restoration process much easier. Spraying oven cleaner would have been really tough, if I'd have had to keep it off the plastic insert.

I got it all apart, and sprayed the metal outer grill with oven cleaner, and it's sitting. I'll probably use my '69 inner grill, because upon closer inspection, the '69 inner grill is in slightly better shape

Ok, here's an update. I put the oven cleaner on and let it sit for an hour, then removed it with a rag and a bucket of water. I honestly don't know if the oven cleaner helped, but the steps after that sure did.

I sanded the entire thing down with a medium grit sanding block. Then sanded it with 400 grit paper. Then sanded it with 600 grit. I then took some Mothers metal rubbing compound and worked it in with a rag, and completed wiping it down with a cean rag. I then connected an attachment to my DeWalt drill on high speed that's basically a disc with a sheepskin looking cover on it. I applied more Mothers to the disc, and buffed it in to the entire grille at high speed. Completed the step with a clean rag wipe down. Final step was some Eagle One metal shiner that I rubbed in, followed by a rub down by a clean rag. It's definitely more shiny. Next step...mask and paint the black areas

I did use a green scuffy pad just because I wanted that brushed texture on the aluminum anyways. If you are going for a polished look, just scrub lightly so you dont scratch it too much. You wont need much force anyways. The anodizing just bubbles right up after about 30 seconds and it wipes right off.

I got the black areas and letters painted!

For the letters, I used a small flat brush and some black paint. For the lines and areas around the headlight, I masked and sprayed it.

Thanks, man. It's been a lot of work, but sure worth it. It's crazy how expensive an original type grill with the Chevrolet letters costs.

I noticed LMC sells an adhesive letter kit for not much, that spells out CHEVROLET

I do have that letter kit but I think it looks cheesy myself I kinda like the smooth look it has. If it does not have the correct stamping.

I got the insert painted to like factory specs (black edges, metallic silver squares), and then got it installed on the truck. Quite the difference! Of course now I need a new front bumper and hood emblem more than ever lol

I'd definately remove the grill first. Oven cleaner will destroy your paint almost instantly.

Hard to believe that came out of a junk yard, great work.

Inspired by your success I took to my local yard today but the C10's were pretty well picked over, what was left was pretty much useless. Still fun to look around though.

Thanks guys. I'm pleased with how it came together. You just never know with junk yards. It helps if the truck has been there for less than a week. Sometimes I find things I didn't even know I wanted, but when I realize its an original part that's in better shape than a particular part I have, and it's like 5 bucks, I'm going for it. Personally, though I'd stay away from stock washer motors, heater blowers, etc. You're talking about a 45 year old part that needs to function, and is likely ready to bite the dust
