I run my stock converter with my 700r4 locked in 3rd gear ALL the time, since I can't use overdrive I keep the transmission in 3rd and the converter locked at all times (manual switch), I bought the lockup wiring from Bowtie overdrives for mine. Using a crappy advance auto torque converter though.

Whenever I'm in third, it is always a short time so the tranny does alot of locking/unlocking which is not great for it. I guess my driving style does it, but I don't need it cycling like that.
Not to mention that when I'm pulling or in a mountainous area, I don't want it locking in 3rd. Right now when I have the shifter in drive it still locks. Locking is not good for towing, neither is the up and down mountain thing. I just want more control over what it does - that's all.

What makes it cycle is a 305 and 3.08 gears
BTW, putting a very heavy load on the converter WHILE it is lock is a no-no.

I respectfully disagree..
if you're referring to the fact that it unlocks under WOT from the factory, its a performance/driveability issue.. mike |

under WOT, the torque converter should lock-up around 80mph, which is how you want it. You gonna tow above 80mph with the pedal buried?

Id also like someone to explain why the T.C. needs to be unlocked during "heavy loads" or towing? None of the stuff Im reading on this thread lately really makes any sense to me so I would like to be enlightened. Just in the last few months I have gotten a 700r4 for my truck. I think Ive learned a fair amount about them & the theory of their workings. If Im wrong Id like to be schooled mike |
