Do it!

BTW, your build is making me think twice about keeping mine 2wd!

Trying to get it where I want it so I can figure out the mounts, pretty tight fit!

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

here is what I did for the mounts. Worked pretty well, however the engine in a 2wd set up is very tight and I spent a long time getting the engine sitting exactly where I want it (not easy with a 1300# engine). It fits with a little room to spare on the firewall and a little room to spare with the front cross brace.

Hopefully that truck has a high hump floor or you'll have some serious cutting to do. If it has a high hump, a 1" body lift gives you enough room to fit everything.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Thanks for the link, your truck looks great!

It has a high hump and after removing the AC compressor I have it where I want it. I plan to build a factory style engine side mount and the '93 lower isolators.
For now it's on standby, wife had a baby boy on Thursday(our 3rd)!

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Had a chance to fab the engine mounts out of 5/16" and 1/4" plate.

Hopefully will have the transmission mount done this weekend so I can wire and start the intercooler piping.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Almost forgot, picked up an '84 CCLB dually frame for my disk brakes, was only $100 and scrapped what I didnt need for $25!

Came with a pair of these hoping I can find 4 more, polished up they would look pretty nice.

Perfect, swap it while it's still apart. I'm on my back modifying the GM trans mount to work with the getrag wishing the cab wasn't in the way.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

This is cool! I build 12v 5.9s at work. I've built 2 in the last 3 weeks and have another block, head and crank at the machine shop as we speak. I've been thinking about building a nasty 12v for my K20. A one inch body lift is no big deal to me.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

I didn't have to do a body lift, or any cutting. With engine on the crane I picked it up letting the transmission angle down, once it was past the crossmember I used a floor jack to raise it and roll slowly as the engine came down/in. Have to say I was surprised how well it fit in there(once the AC and heater box were removed). I plan to get the bracket to raise the compressor and I will probably end up flipping the exhaust manifold so it clears.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Subscribed! Great build. I really been wanting to do this but with a 1/2 ton i think the 12v is a bit much for the rails. 4bt motors are nice but real expensive as well.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Mounted the fenders and hood last night and did some mockup....
Dodge radiator is too tall by roughly 2" and the GM radiator is too wide for the first gen intercooler.

The hood will still close with the Dodge radiator if you still wanted to use that. I am running it.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

I had it in and it's 2" from closing, I'm guessing the slant nose is the culprit.

What did you do as far as the wiring, and were you able to use the stock voltage reg?

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Oh yeah, forgot about that being a '68.

Luckily those engines don't need much of a radiator to stay cool. They run cool to begin with. I'm sure a universal radiator would work fine.

Just went back through your thread and saw your non intercooled and have a different radiator than I do.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Finally able to get some time with the truck.....well sort of, removed the disc brakes from the dually stub and hoping to get everything swapped onto the '68. Also using the power steering and sway bar/braces.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Today was a great day to work outside, perfect temperature!

Finalized the disk brakes and swapped the gearbox/steering parts from the '84, got the core support cut and the intercooler and piping installed. Can't believe that I was able to use everything from the dodge and only had to trim the intercooler mounting tabs so they clear the headlights. Waiting on a custom radiator to be built and I should be able to fire it up next week, already bumped it over with the key!
