Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

I had known that, i meant more modern tractors with detroits, somethin to compete with ih, j.i.case and deere, as well as ford. I suppose the closest would be the kinze repowered deeres, those all had detroits, some i think were v12's.

Wow, I have never seen a 6-71 in a Mack R. Not saying they didn't build any, I just have yet to see one. Roadway had a lot of Mack R's with 8V-71's in them, that was one of their standard line-haul tractors for many years. Even had some later version R's with 6V-92TA's.

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

Yeah, the R-Model with the 6-71 was running around back in the 80's. Even then I questioned if it was original or not. I would had guessed it was owner installed, but I never got a chance to talk to the driver.

I used to ride in a '70 R-700 with an 8V-71 and a 5 X 4 Trans. That was one heck of a truck. It had little short mufflers on the Dual Stacks and sure sounded sweet.

I wonder if a 6-71 could be installed in a 73-87 truck, that would be pretty sweet.

In a 2-Ton Truck, it would be a tight fit and a lot of custom work, but it is possible. A 6V-53 would be a better choice. A 4-53 was actually a factory option in certain years of that era.

My Dad operated one of these. He said it took 3 low boy semi trailers to move a TC12. One for each half and one for the blade.

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

In Iraq I drove one of these.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_E...Tactical_Truck

Mine was the M984 Wrecker. there wasn't much that I asked it to do that it couldn't do.

Funny story, I had a muffler go bad on us out in the field so we straight piped that bad boy for the last 100 miles of the convoy.
The sound of that turbo spinning up is still music to my ears.

Great Link there mrolds88.

If only half of American industries, had half the pride that they had in their corporation, it sure would be a different country today.

Don't forget, GM founded EMD, one of the largest manufacturers of diesel-electric railroad locomotives. This particular locomotive is an FP45 from 1967. It has a turbocharged 20 cylinder EMD 654 diesel of 3,600 h.p.. These engines are similar to Detroits in that they are 2 stroke, and the '654' designation stands for the cubic inch displacement of one cylinder! I volunteer at that museum, and have had the pleasure of not only working on that particular locomotive (it is currently being restored) but operating it as well.
Hello Bob!

Thanks for sharing this. As a new resident to So Cal, I will be coming up and taking a look at the Museum's operations.

I'm sure it's some insane amount that only a government agency could afford. It's got a 12V71 just to power the auger!

Don't know if you guys have ever seen this video, but it's a good one.

Sounds almost exactly the same as the 6V92 in the International I used to drive, though I had two sticks and a 48' trailer behind me.

There are actually 2 or 3 videos of that truck out there.

Good to see it again.

It sure does sound sweet.

What year and model was your IH?

Also was it a 5 X 2, 5 X 3, or a 5 X 4?

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

I don't know what year it was--company rig--but I'd guess early 'eighties by the cab, though it had a later model fiberglass tilt-nose on it. It had a 6V92 and a five and four. I think the transmission came from an older truck, as did the pad suspension.

It had a stretch frame and three axles, though the steer was set-back, and it rode like a punch to the kidney. No a/c, hotter than all get out in summer, and a rattle-trap.

I learned a lot about trucking in that old thing, and when I finally moved up into a then-new Freightliner FLD, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

Nowadays, I miss the old girl, though I miss a lot about trucking in the 'nineties. Nowadays, there's not much fun in it.

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

I started working for a small City DPW in 1975.

They had an ancient 20 year old WABCO 555 motor grader, powered by a 6-71 that was only run by 1 operator in 10 years.
No one else was "allowed"to run it.
I conned the old guy, Jack, into showing me the ropes, letting me run it some, kinda like unauthorized OTJ training.

That was near the time that the last dirt roads in town were paved, so the grader sat a lot.
Management kept it around for odd jobs and plowing snow.

I was very junior in seniorority, but I weaseled into a spot where I worked ALL the overtime using it to plow snow!
Overtime was assigned by seniority, but I was the only one who could/would run it. Old Jack preferred his OT in a nice comfy dump truck.

Yeah, it was difficult to operate if you didn't like operatin', but the main complaint was the noise.
It had a 5 or 6 inch straight pipe, no muffler.
I loved it.

I woke generations of people ( we plowed at night if possible) with it.

It had, I think, 12 forward gears so you could always find a gear to run it wide open.
And it ran best wide open.

Looked just like this, except it was municipal orange.

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

I am new to the forum. I made a couple of posts here because I am hunting a V-12 GMC 702. I want to make a heavy ratrod.
Anyway I made a living working on some heavy engines for 41 years. Our heaviest one weighed 320,000# without the turbocharger. Just a wild guess it weighed 10,000#. It produced 4100 bhp @ 330 RPM. A V-10 2 stroke Dresser-Rand pipeline compressor. The V-10 holds 2200gallons of oil. I posted pictures of a 2000 bhp being overhauled on this thread:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...68#post6968868

I have followed this Big Bud tractor since it was being built. It has a Detroit 16V-71. Specs here:
http://www.williamsbigbud.com/about-us/
I thought someone built one with 2 Detroit 8V92's but can't find it.

Sure is a brute. To transport it from state to state, I'm going to say that they at least needed to take off the outside Dual Wheels, Tractor Cab and Dual Stacks.

Interesting piece of machinery.

No kidding, what a project! And it started in California, went to Florida, then to Montana!
That thing's had a couple long semi rides.

There's a video about Big Bud that I bought maybe 5 years agofor about $25.00. I loaned it to somebody and never got it back .

When it was purchased by the Williams brothers it was brought back to the factory, refurbished and repowered with a 16V92T. There's also U tube videos of it at a big show in Rantool, Ill.
