Ok now tell me if I got this right ,I have a stock alternator setup.if I change it to a higher output one wire alternator I just need to bypass the external regulator ? I did this years ago on a 61 Chevy but my memory ain't good ,especially after last night

well...a one wire ...just has one wire running to the battery....
you would have to ask a wiring expert...how to keep your gauges
working?????????

thats why i just used that little conversion kit(20.00)from frank
PICKMUP.....AND installed that 84 camero internal regulated
alt...all my stuff still works....if (never will) i wanted to go back
just unplug the connector kit and reinstall the stocker....

hope that answers your question

runnign both the ext and int regulator can also fry your battery, trust me, i boiled a brand new interstate battery

can running too powerful of an alternator be bad? i see summit has a chrome one that puts out 100 amps. is that too much?

Also, they make kits for stock alternators that will bump them up to 95 amps or so for under 40 bones.

I've had mine converted for a little over a year.. One of the best things I've done to the truck.. I converted after the ext regulator took a dive and burned up a big chunk of my headlight harness.. Lucky me nothing actually caught on fire.

Found it on Ebay from a good seller, 3 wire hook up... one ground wire, a positive wire , and one wire that plugs into the alternator itself. Was boxed up nicely with 135 amp stickers all over the place.

Look here, http://www.madelectrical.com/electrical-tech.shtml I bought a 12SI and rewired everything using his products. You have to call him directly to order, but you just tell him what you are doing and he will tell you what you need and give you tech help. Great company!

On my concept one pulley system that i run on my 68 came with a 100 amp alt one wire set up. I am running a duel 13" fan set up, Air conditioning, high amp stereo, hela driving lights with the high beam conversion. I ended up rebuilding the 100 amp alt twice last yr. I installed all the good parts including hd bearings. It wouldn't keep up with the demand. I had a buddy check the amp draw and found out the fan assemble pulled 55 amps by themselves!!! Turn the air on at night with the headlights and it totaled over 105 amps!!!! I was literally burning it up. This was at in town rpm on the engine running at lower rpm. The bottom pulley is a 5" and the alt pulley was 2.25" Highway rpm cured it and the alt never dropped below 13.5 volts. Intown stoplight to stoplight and it was at 9.5 to 10 volts!!! Not enought rpm to keep the alt from charging properly. I contacted concept one and they were great, They built me a 6" lower pulley and i bought a 160 amp msd 1 wire alternator. Now at 900 engine rpm the alt charges at 12.5 volts. As soon as i hit 1000 eng rpm the alt jumps to 13.5 and stays there. I can now cruise around town and have the stereo on and air and not worry. When you start loading up on all these electronic items the amp draw goes tru the roof. Find some one who can check your amp draw and you will be surprised.

I checked on the high amp alternators when I went to work last night (Advance Auto). The 94 amp is on the 84 Z28 Camaro, but there were two different vin codes for two different 305's, one had the 94 amp alternator, the other didn't.

I also checked some other models that year to see what others had for Alt's. The corvette 350 had a 103 amp alternator, and the adjusting ear on the alternator is threaded on that one. You could just use a bolt from the backside of the bracket screwed into the alternator instead of a bolt and nut on the non threaded ones. I've forgotten the exact prices of each, but I think the 94 amp was around $75 and the 103 amp was around $95.

I was just wondering how I would be addressing the inevitable low amperage issue when I install A/C and a big stereo system in a few months. Nice to know a $55 parts upgrade to my alternator will save me from buying/trading up to a larger alternator.

You stereo guys should be installing a capacitor if you are running subs. This fixes one issue of amperage, when your subs "hit" your capacitor will keep the juice flowing to your amp and not have your lights dim

Is this conversion kit still available? I am looking into ditching the external regulator....

I’ve been hanging on this alternator for a long time, now I just may have a use for it!
My concern is the plug on the alternator any ideas? It has 4 terminals on the connector.
I’ll go to u-pull-it next week and get a connector but not sure what terminal does what tho.
Rage-n Rat- was yours a CS 130? I’ve noticed there’s some differences in the wiring dealing with the external regulator. There is a picture showing all 4 wires being jumped and this one shows only the two external ones only. I think I’ll make my own. I just need to know what need to be done.
