Further on my above point.
If someone didn't put some cheap paint on my 65, and left it in primer, it'd be it so much worst shape today.

I plan on trying to find a color real close to what my 65 is now, and cover the areas that have become exposed. Then I will go back and restore part by part.

Truck is straight enough that in a weekend I could have a good daily driver paint job on it with the tools I have. So it will just have to get a quickie until I can do it the way I want....

96-cent rattle-can paint at walmart. We just started "painting" our truck. lol -- so far 6 cans for the panel truck (we're using black with the fat classic body stripe to break up the black-- we'll be using white later, yeah; I know - we did it backwards. LOL)

I have painted more than one truck with rustoleum or derusto with some very good results.....when it gets scratched its no big deal...... and it always lays down , just takes a few days to dry...

The "patina" thing has taken on a life of it's own in recent years. Since forever, finding an original paint, unmolested, undamaged car or truck that desperately needed a repaint was the very best way to find a solid but inexpensive project vehicle. Most of us can remember the excitement of rolling up on a said example when checking out potential buys. That initial exhilarating feeling is exactly what is driving the current trend toward leaving them in that state, especially because most of us (markeb included, lol) would quickly respray them, leaving fewer and fewer to find as the years rolled on.
In the last two decades, the restoration game has been so well developed that 100% perfect vehicles are now commonplace and no longer quicken our collective pulse. Not the case with finding a perfect project, which still does the trick just as it always has.
As for my personal taste, it's the un-screwed-with element that sends me going. Whether it's perfectly preserved, or a time-faded survivor, I love it.
below is a pic of my 3/4 ton workhorse. I've had this truck for much longer than either of my preserved trucks, and absolutely love it "as-is". I bought paint for it fifteen years ago, but never could bring myself to cover over that beautiful, natural age.

I'm with oem4me, save that original paint!! I've got an original paint '64 VW Bug and would never bring myself to repaint it, even if it is faded and worn to the primer in places. We also have my grandpa's '51 Ford 8N tractor that is original paint and unrestored. We could restore it but them it would be just another restored 8N- if we preserve it as it is it will always be "grandpa's tractor". It's still exactly the way he used it all those years in his garden, and every time he comes over he always goes out to the tractor shed to check on his tractor.

How do you remember the truck when your grandfather had it, shiny and new, or used and faded? That would be how I decided what to do with it.

I remember it sitting in the front yard under a tree..... problem solved restoration complete, LOL.

I got it when I was about 15 or 16, I grew up going to Grandpa's house and playing in it sitting in the yard. Grandpa bought a new truck about every year so the previous year truck became a farm truck, and he used them then parked them around the farm. ( there is still a 1973 with 33,000 miles sitting in the old garden spot ) . The only memories I have of the truck are it sitting and me playing in it, then making a deal to work one summer in trade for the truck. I then began the long journey of getting it running, driving it some for a few years and before you know it.... we are having this conversation. I never saw him or anyone else ( that I can remember ) drive this truck.

I have always loved the Blue and White Fleetside Custom Cab and that was what I had always dreamed this truck becoming. Grandpa always fixed things up, He would buy sick calves that no one else wanted to mess with and he would nurse them back to health. I know he would have wanted the same for this truck take an ugly duckling and turn it into a beautiful swan.

Good choice my man. I personally do not care at all for the "patina" look. I would say "That thing is crusty and needs paint asap". While others would say "No, thats just the patina". Get out of here. Let the flaming begin.

So, to add to the "to paint it or not to paint it" discussion - I was looking at this truck: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1959-...item3a70f88808

It's on ebay and this guy sells LOTs and lots of trucks, so I know I'd be getting what I was paying for. When you look at the pic and the interior, it's a very solid truck. I was actually getting very interested because I really liked the look of the truck "as is" - then I saw a note in the description that the bed was now IN PRIMER, READY TO PAINT. Ugh. I'd have been calling this guy if it was as it was shown in the pics. Now with the bed in fresh primer, I'd HAVE TO paint it - and I'd never see that old original (or at least old if not original) paint again. Oh well - still a very nice truck and a fair price considering the overall condition, but it lost its sizzle when I read that. So, I guess I'm leaning to OEM4ME's line of thinking...

I agree. And as most of us have experienced, you never really know why the primer is on there. Was it an act of kindness, or to cover up that recent addition of a gallon of bondo?

He will be protecting it.
I still feel very nostalgic over a properly restored truck with new paint.
What will his Grandpa's truck look like in 10-20 years if he leaves the patina?
What will it look like in 10-20 years if he protects it with paint?

I really like the patina look. One of the reasons is because I won't have the money to paint it in forever. To my Great grandpa and grandpa, it was just a truck. It's ALOT more to me because it was theirs. Someday I will go with paint, but until then, I'm workin to get some sort of base that I like.

Add me to the anti-patina crowd. I just don't get it.

My 72 has been "restored" once but whoever did it cut a lot of corners. It doesn't look bad if you don't get too close, but I won't be happy till the rust is gone and it has a fresh coat of Medium Blue and White paint and a new Highlander seat cover.

Gotta chime in here - the patina's cool as far as it goes on a solid truck......but my project had so much rust, in another few years it would have disintegrated. I actually thought about the faux-tina until I could get a good paint job, but thought "if I'm gonna spend all this cash and work my butt off, I might as well make it look as good as I can".
On the other side, I've seen some faux-tina/patina trucks that looked really cool to me, especially the ones with door art.
