Gonna try CLR today

I moved my truck home this week and today is suppose to be sunny and around 60 so I am going to try out the CLR and see how it actually works. I will post pictures through out the day on how it does. Here is some before

Why would you want to rub CLR on it? You should be worried about how much of your coils your going to cut. I like the paint just the way it is. It is amazing what alittle elbow grease and some chemicals can do though.

Gonna CLR cuz I am currently too broke to paint it! I just cant do the lowered look, I am more of a stock ride and height guy. I am only 40 so maybe I will grow out of it one day, lol!

This was Grandpa's truck so I want to put it back to its original glory

Good luck on the paint thing. I'm thinking the lowered thing will just take some time. Untill then at least put that sway bar on. That thing seems to sit really high in the front. Must have some new coils. It does have an engine right. Maybe it's just the tires. Are you done yet?

Gonna use both steel wool on the lighter areas and scuff pad on the more heavily rusty areas

Stock front coils, factory 6 cyl truck, long block back in no intake or exhaust, no rad or any fluids. I think it will sit down some more with everything installed. Tires on the rear are a 215 with 235 on the front ( just what I had for rollers ) the white walls make a diiference to I think. Far from done, just trying to get it ready to make an appearance at the April car show. I will keep working on it lil by lil until I get it done. It has sat with no attention for the last 15 years.... I have owned it for 25 years

Here are some pictures..... Not the results I wanted but they are the results I expected.... My paint was so thin that it rubbed thru it very very fast. The rusty spots had no paint under them and the Lime away actually brought out shiny metal. Walmart did not have CLR so I used Lime Away, maybe to harsh, might try CLR just to see if I get different results. I was not planning on painting right away due to finances but I may be forced to do it faster than I wanted.

Why are the doors and cab the only pieces to have red primer and the fenders, hood, bed all have black primer?

I wonder if that will make it rust more? My truck is that same different primer in different spots. I think I have a fender that goes green black red black.

That's the way the factory did it. Strange huh? It's lookin good- hose some satin clear over it and call it done!!

Ah man when I read the title of this thread I was hoping it wasn't this truck. CLR works great but sometimes it works too good. I used it on my Old Blue Balls truck and I lost all the cool rust flavor of the patina. I absolutley loved how this truck looked before. I'm very intersted to see the whole thing when you have it done. Awesome truck man.

I am gonna make alot of people cringe..... I just dont like the rust patina look, at least not for this truck...... pretty much not at all, Lol. I want to get it looking better than it was when new.

I share the same "quirkiness" as OEM4ME and a few others. If I had the money it would be painted tomorrow. I had over $12,000 dollars saved up when I decided to start this project again.... but with my Wife back in college, my oldest daughter in college and getting married in June and my 4 year old having a rare medical condition that makes her bones break easily.... Well the money is gone. Plans are now to be able to drive it again and not let it sit rusting in the back yard, and be sitting in a chair beside it at the local car show come April.

Thanks to all who offer kind words about the truck and loving the look it has now. It really is in better condition than when I got it 25 years ago. This body is really solid and I have always loved the look of the fleetsides. My old body was really rusty and beat up.

Well we may be in the minority, but you’re not alone in preferring the stock ride height and nice paint. I’d never heard of patina paint on a truck until I joined this forum a few years ago. Apparently I ruined many old cars over the years with “perfect patina”. I just thought they looked worn out so the first priority was to remove all the dings and return them to glory with a fresh coat of shiny new paint!

If have come to appreciate the art form of a uniformly deteriorated natural finish, I just don’t prefer it on something I would want to own.

You can get that thing painted to keep it from rotting away on you; and do it for little $$$. Look up C/L and find a power sprayer(Wagner) and get some single stage and go to town. Mask it well and prep the body well and it would turn out ok for a driver and would keep it nice until you can really tear into it.

I like paint.
I don't care for rust even in its 'patina' stage.
I'd epoxy it.
I'd paint it with rust-olium before I would leave metal exposed.
There's certain forums where members will beat you down and mock you for using cheap paint, but I'd rather get something on it rather than wait until I can afford to 'do it right' as they call it.

I will put a paint job on it soon, I have spray guns, sanders and a masking paper stand ... body hammers and dollies, mig welders, and tons of tools. I just dont have a shop at the house ( bought this place 12 years ago and haven't built anything on it, lost my business with a 15,000 square foot shop due to bad partnerships ). I am determined to make it happen even though the odds are against me. Thanks for the pep talk, I just really wanted to do it right the first time, ya know.
