Re: Cutting holes in a perfectly good hood

I have to say the work is top notch!

My question would be why all the work to basically have a 2 bbl carb? All that work, I would want all three carbs to work otherwise it's just all show and no go.

Again, great job on the work, props for that.

Thanks, all, for the positive comments!

I have an "all go" car too, so this one is fine for getting me down the road at 65.

I've got a PB Dropmember with the prototype set of I6 mounts. The bushing method is nice and tight. We'll see what happens when I drive it, but I don't anticipate any issues.

Yes. He cut it in 2 pieces so we could use thinner (read as "cheaper") stock, and then they're bolted together. As you can see in the CAD 3D, the original plan was to add the necessary height on the carb side. Again, due to material cost, we were going to cut those as separate pieces. However, after lots of measuring, it turned out to be better to add the bulk of the height on the bottom of the unit. However, mekdad had already finished cutting... so we used an off-the-shelf 4bbl spacer. If I was being anal, I'd probably have mekdad recut the bottom piece again with the added spacer height built in.

BTW, one of the things that didn't get done, that I hope to get around to fairly soon... I want to bead blast the whole manifold to give it a cast look to match the Clifford on the bottom. Right now it's a little too "machiney." I've still got to make a mount for the fuel distribution block, and tidy up a few other things as well.

Actually, if you study this pic closely, you'll note that the fuel inlets on the front 2 carbs are plugged. The front 2 carbs are externally fully functional dummies. All the linkage on them works, but they don't squirt fuel. In fact, while my log manifold has pockets under the carbs, they don't connect with one another. What I have is a 2bbl carb with a straight shot into the manifold. Simplicity at its finest

poser! j/k...this rig rocks!

I'm not a fan of any holes in the hood, but this is unique and well executed. Best job I've seen. If the carbs all worked, then you would be getting the best engineering award, too.

Dude, that is coolest thing I've ever seen. When I first saw the title of the thread I thought, "Ah hell, this is gonna be something akin to 1980s prostreet graphics and paint." Obviously I was pleasantly surprised.

Way to go.

Re: Cutting holes in a perfectly good hood

Great execution of an off the beaten path mod.3 dueces would be an awesome set-up but hardly worth the hassle since a 6 is still going to be limited on performance. The look is great though and you made it work without tuning problems. And you are going to get some stares from folks when the hood is closed since they will wonder why the carbs are on the left side only.
You also found some members with awesome skills to execute a plan.

This was one of my concerns as well but like XXL said with the PB DM in their the motor is very rigid with out being solid. I pulled it out last night and gave it the power brake test and their we no contact problems at all.

I must say some of the things XXL has asked me to do has had me wondering what he's been smoking. But in the end every mod has worked very well with everything else on the truck. My first thoughts were "you want me to do what to your hood!!" and if I remember right I even tried to talk him out of it. I am glad he is more stubborn than I am Wait until he shows all the rest of the mods from this round of metal surgery.

Re: Cutting holes in a perfectly good hood

Here are a couple of shots that give you a better view of the effect (along with a gratuitous shot of Kevin's "rokcrln" truck).

Note also the front rolled pan and welded seams. I decided I didn't want to build another bumper after the previous one was damaged by movers (see especially post #62 where I give them a public referral as requested. If you're interested in their services, please feel free to call them on their toll-free number). While the bumper was very "smooth," the rolled pan really pulls together the super-shaved theme of the truck well.
