Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
I've got Impala SS rear discs on my 71 GMC. I went the other way though.....Got an entire rear end out of a Caprice Cop Car (Same as Impala SS), cut off all the caprice trailing arm crap. welded on my own saddles & shock mounts & bolted the entire setup into the truck. That was the main reason I chose to start with a rear leaf truck. I've got the parking brake that works on the drum inside the rotor. E-brake cables were a lot easier than expected. I'll try to snap some pics.
I'm probably the ONLY guy to take OUT a 12 bolt, but the 8.5" 10 bolt from the caprice has 30 spline axels and is beefy enough for what I'm doin. I have another one slated for my '58.

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
Actually I was thinking of doing the exact same thing with the '96 Caprice I bought from HartRod but I keep getting funny looks when I mention replacing my truck's 12 bolt with the 10 bolt. If you could share your experience with installation and performance after the install I would appreciate it.

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
I'm pretty satisfied. My rear end was a '95. I finished off the Auburn Posi that came in it and found out it's not rebuildable. I put in a detroit true-trac instead. VERY happy with that.
The housing had ears cast into the center section which I trimmed & ground off. I then trimmed all of the steel mounting brackets off the tubes, Lined up spring perches, & welded em up. I've since added traction bars and a sway bar. No complaints. only thing was, the caprice housing was about 1"-1.5" narrower than the stocker. I centered it up in the truck & fixed the width issue with my wheel backspacing. For the E-Brake cables (this is slick..) I ordered new rear cables for the caprice which both route to the driver side instead of the "X" style setup which was original to the truck. I saved the brackets that hook the 2 cables together & support them to the frame from the caprice (same setup was used on late 80's chevy vans & MANY other applications). I hooked up the cables to the rear end, hooked them through the above mentioned brackets and ran the cable that needs to be pulled up under the frame rail toward the front. Wouldn't ya know, the stock cable on the truck from the pedal lined up within an inch of the caprice rears. Plus, the cable from the pedal has a 1/4" threaded section for adjustment! Almost like it was made to work. This is tough to visualize and pics speak 1000, so I'll snap some pics at home tonight. I get funny looks on the 12 bolt thing too, but I don't really care what other people think. I'm of the opinion that I'm the one driving it, so I'll build it the way I want. If someone else would have done it different, that's fine, they can go build one. By the way, I kept the 12 bolt just in case . Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
If I could get some brackets fabbed up I would love to keep my 12 bolt in place. Anyone have any ideas where to look for a vendor?

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
Thanks for the pics man. I will keep you updated on what happens with my setup. BTW, when you said the caprice housing was about 1"-1.5" narrower than the stocker did you mean from one side to the other or from the center out?

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
Anyone know of, done home grown disc brakes on a Dana 60? Most I see on E-Gay are for "Dodge" or "Ford" style Dana 60's. Is ours one of the two or its own backplate boltpattern?

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
I am about half way through collecting parts to do this swap, has anyone ever tried to adapt the backing plate/e-brake shoes onto the truck rearend? Is anyone making brackets yet?

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
I made my brackets from the specs I posted above. I could not use the bracket supplied from the Caprice. I also don't have an E brake, but might go with a Camaro caliper later that has them.

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
Inthuwind, I think the Camaro calipers take a different bracket then the Impala so you can't interchange without them.

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
I thought I read somewhere here that they used Camaro calipers on Caprice brackets. I'll look around in here and see if I can find the article. Sorry if I am wrong, maybe someone will chime in here~~~TTT for now.

Re: Who has Impala SS rear disc brakes ??
Well, the calipers and brackets are about the same, I see you need to fab a different BACKING PLATE for the different calipers from what Chopped 71 did on the first page of this thread. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't want to confuse anyone. My 12 bolt rear is done, with caprice calipers, brackets and self fabbed backing plate. I thought later I would just swap to camaro calipers.
