Re: 60-66 early take-off tailgate

Sorry Yote, didn't mean to put you on the spot. OEM mentioned he had another equally nice straight gate. Lets see what he comes up with since this is his for sale post, maybe we both come out good.

Re: 60-66 early take-off tailgate

Sorry guys, just got home from a long day at work. I currently have two take-off OG white gates. Both are about the same as for being straight/undamaged. The one you've seen has better paint. No rust or even patina on the other, just duller paint. Must've seen more weather, I guess. I recently put the duller one on my current project truck, which is what I really want a light blue gate for. I'll sell them both to help you guys out and because I currently need the dough.
It's dark now and too late to get some shots of the 2nd gate. I'll do it as soon as I can. Hang in there, we'll get this done.

Why do you need original paint, Yote? If you're going to re-paint anyway why spoil a factory-paint tailgate? Why not re-paint one that's already been painted before? Just wonderin'.

You know Bruce...I hate to hear you needing any dough when you have all those wonderful survivors that I am sure storage is getting tough for you as well. So I think it only thoughtful to offer to help out by giving you my 65' for yours and of course I will include a bunch of dough to refill your coffers so you won't have to sell off your precious and prudently acquired OEM parts...Here, I'll will gladly trade you my GMC I1500 and some dough for your Chevy C10 to get you over the hump and prevent any further loss to your dwindling stash of unbelievably clean and sought after "take-off" parts? jon

Gate #2. I'll do better in daylight. That is NOT a dent on the lower right under the flash

the reason I want an original paint is so I can see the virginity in the gate. the last one I bought looked good until I blasted it. it was full of bondo!

Well, like I was joking about, this is a bit of a pickle. I think forum rules state that he who first posts "I'll take it" gets it. Out of courtesy though, we often defer to the earlier poster who requests photos or more info before making that decision. This is NOT a rule as far as I know, but in the interest of keeping thing civil, it happens a lot. It's a good thing.
Of course, timing is critical too, especially on a hot deal, or rare part. We all can't be expected to wait around for a response that may never come.
So, the way I'm seeing it now is we need three gates to satisfy everybody. I only have two to sell. I'll have to go back and review the order of responses, but the math is simple. Patience fellas...

Yes, orig paint. It's straight. Last night I saw ONE little dent that barely qualifies as a dent, on the outside top panel. Primer might fill it, or one little pop with a stud gun, and it'd be gone. You really gotta look for it to see it.
I'll take a better look and more pics today.

Well, that would work. I certainly have no objections, but I cant tell Jon what to do with his parts, nor should we expect that of anyone. We all know how tough it is to find these things in this shape, so I'm not gonna hold my breath.
So far though, if we go to wrestling over who gets what gate, I gotta give preference to the guy with originality in mind. Rules or no rules, those is my rules! Lol...
Remember, it's just a hobby.

Re: 60-66 early take-off tailgate

Just went through my gates , seems I have more GMCs than Chevys. Only one I can let go is this one from my 1963 . Its a 27,000 mile truck . Previous owner made this a camper back in 1963 and took the bed off the truck and stored the bed. In that time of sitting he spayed the bed only and gate because the paint was getting thin? I think he let the bed sit outside a couple of winters. Theres no dents on the inside but it has three quarter size dents about an inch down from the top. Zero rust or bondo. The gate on my white 65 is the right off-white color for this 63 . So that's where my 65s white gate is going.

I hear you Sodly, I always thought the appeal of an early take off tailgate is straight has very good finish ( not perfect) original paint AND it would be perfect match for the same color original survivor truck with good finish original paint. I would expect to pay a premium price if I didn't have to do any painting. I believe a used very straight original paint tailgate ( with the surface rust and faded paint ) could be found cheaper than these "elite" rarer items.

Re: 60-66 early take-off tailgate

Yote found another, and no response from Leroy, so after all this I still have the white (or maybe off-white) gate pictured.
To recap: Original paint, no dents but a few very small dings, with pits and scratches in the paint. Price is $375 plus $75 shipped in a wood crate.
More pics upon request. Respond here and Pm me your email.
EDIT: Oh yeah, might also trade for a 64-66 light blue gate in similar shape. Light patina ok.
