Very nice. Always a fan of the "Father/Son" projects. Teaches kids so much. Not to mention a love for the classics.

Re: mylow53 build

ok so after thanksgiving we decided to take the motocycles out for a ride up in jawbone canyon. this is near mojave california. at the end of the trail there was an old abandoned mine shaft. and near the old shaft were severl shot up and burned out cards and trucks. in the pile was a 1954 1 ton pu flat bed. so we brought the tools to pull some parts. we pulled all 4 hinges and the 2 windwings. since i last saw this truck some one had filled it full of lead litterally. one bullet had hit the head of the hinge bolt and i couldn't get a socket on it.... anyways belive it or not we only broke 3 hinge bolts in the process. everything else came apart fairly easily. you see they store airplanes in mojave big ones 747's mainly because of the year round low humidity... here are some picts of the adventure

Wow, looks like too much fun. Score on the '54 hinges! Are they the same as your 53? I know the striker and handles are different.

I grew up riding Jawbone. Although the last few years we start in Dove Springs because Jawbone gets too crowded. By the way thanks for the reply.

Re: mylow53 build

we are still looking in to the rear, da rod shop is behind on some other projects so i told him to wait a cupple of months since i will be pretty busy with the cab. i told him a ford 9 inch and a 4 link. but there must be hundreds to choose from. the only qualifiers for me are room for a 20 gal tank and shocks mounted seporate from the airbags like the frount. as far as hinges go i havent looked in to rebuilding yet. i have 8 to chose from. they all seem functional but as the build progresses i will probably have to. i'm more worried about the one hinge i cant get out!

total for the truck should be arround 1k but just the cab was $345. i had all body parts thru the sandblaster. the big cost is the eching primer that should run arround 1200 for the whole truck..

Re: mylow53 build

ok a quick update i got the cab back from the painter who put a thick coat of black eching primer everywhere. since then i've been filling all the holes. there were 4 holes where the drip rail goes. so i yanked the driprails and welded in some small patches. now i told this to a buddy at work and he told me about a friend that shaved the driprails of his vw. long story short the rain destroyed his interior. i was wondering if anyone has any experience with this good or bad...
by the way my son took this picture before the sand blasters got the cab i thought it was intresting how i chose the same hue of red 2 times!

Re: mylow53 build

update on cab progress, i just finished welding in the cab corners. aparently the patch panel's curve was slightly difrent that the original. so instead of a small patch the entire corner needed to be replaced heres some picts of the finished product.

Re: mylow53 build

the cab will sit on an original frame since i won't have over 350 hp. the idea is to keep it with as much original metal as i can. my personal time machine.... oh the frame is still at the rod shop i'm just concentrating on the cab rust for now. heres some pics of my 11 year old welding. were filling in the gas tank filler hole. he cut out the replacement metal by himself shaped it, and i tacked it in. he then filled in the rest of the welding... his welding has improved it ain't no row of dimes but it will hold just fine...
