we are talking overdrive tranny's
the 200c is a 3 speed no overdrive. only lock up converter clutch..
no f body came with a 200r4 all where 700r4
some 78-81 had th250 three speeds..
the thread was about overdrives so I didn't think I needed to include the 3 speed 1 to 1 high gear automatics

Re: what vehicles came with 200r4 from junk yard

I have had a few 2004r behind strong engines one 87 buick gn that I would guess around 375hp 12.70 at 118 [lots of tire spin] I had a manual lockup switch that turned it into feelng like a stick shift It locked the tqconv. at the 1-2 shift and stayed in under full throttle, it was an art carr convertor that could take it man I miss that car. I think they are better than a 700 any day

Re: what vehicles came with 200r4 from junk yard

I have a 67 chevy shortbox with an 80s 350 and 3 speed manual. Would the 200-4r be a good/easy swap?

Should bolt right in place you might have to move the transmission crossmember but the drive shaft will bolt right in.

I've always heard bad things about the 2004r but this post shed some good light on the subject

Hey guys...Whats the best way to identify the 2004r? Pan bolts, or is there an ID tag somewhere?

Re: what vehicles came with 200r4 from junk yard

The easiest way I have found is that the 2004r doesn't have a removable tailstock like the 700r4 or the TH350, the case is cast in one piece. (see pictures)

Here is an article about the 2004r that was in Hemmings Motor News that I will add to this thread.

Be aware the lowly TH200 and TH200C are also one piece cases.

MX0 on the spid label for the 2004r

But a crawl under wouldn't hurt. No telling what might have been swapped in.

For those nit picking on people saying 200r4 (which seems natural since GM put the letter after the first three numbers on 700r4) saying it's 2004r,you are also wrong. GM calls them 200-4r. Just a little side note on this four year old thread.

Call it what you want, I'm on my phone so a hyphen poses a extra keystroke or two so it gets dropped. People may or may not understand.

I do know the inner workings and why a 2004r does or doesnt work. And see there, I missed an apostrophy and a hyphen as that takes more keystrokes, too.

I don't think those people I was referring to were posting from their phones in 2010. That's funny, extra keystroke. Don't wear yourself out for the sake of grammar

Re: what vehicles came with 200r4 from junk yard

I installed a 2004r in my 69 CST short bed. The best part is, it was a powerglide truck to start with and the two trannys are the same length. All I had to do was move the cross member back to the already pre-drilled holes in the frame for the TH400. The drive shaft didn't need to be shortened and popped right back in. There is more to it than that, you do need to wire a way to unlock the torque converter & you need a bracket to attach the the TV cable to the carb (this is especially important to get correcct) I went the easy but pricey route of Purchasing everything from Bowtie Overdrives http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/. They have everything included a wealth of information on their website and you can call their tech guys if you have questions. I bought a wiring kit from them that hooked up a switch to my brake light switch to unlock the torque converter when you hit the brakes. I also bought a TV cable setup made for a Edelbrock carb/manifold. Then don''t forget if you want your speedo to work properly you need to change out the speedo gears in the tranny. Now with a tonneau on the bed I get 19 MPG on the highway diving 70 MPH while the engine is turning just under 2000 RMP.

It's all good. I was just giving the nit pickers a taste of their own medicine. Nothing was directed at you or that other feller who felt he needed to defend himself.
