As far as I can tell from my catalog, Longbeds have 7 cross braces and shortbeds have 6.

Thanks squirel. I recently used some Varathane interior poly that is water based (believe it or not) and it came out great. It was SO easy to sand and re-coat fast that I laid about six satin coats on my fireplace mantel. I'm sure the stuff you used isn't water based but good to know, thanks again

Wow... that looks fantastic! Since wood moves with the seasons, will you have to re-tighten the bolts/screws again? Lock nuts?

Re: wood floor installed pictures

Over the past couple of years I have restored two 1971 Longhorns. One is painted red with a cedar bed that I made using a table saw and router. The other is painted yellow with a red oak bed. The oak bed I bought from Mar-K and it fit perfect. It is well worth the money to me. The red truck with the cedar bed is my driver. I finished it two years ago. Both beds are finished with Min-Wax Helsmans spar urathane. The finish on this truck is flaking off. I would recomend you do not use this. Theyellow truck I do not drive very often and am hesitant to do so becaure I fear the finish will also flake off. Both beds I put natural stain on and then ten coats of Min-Wax on all sides of the boards sanding between each coat. I chose cedar for the driver because cedar holds up well here in Minnesota and was very affordable. About 100 dollars for the wood.

Dan in Pasadena: I am at work right now but I am sure that it is water based I will check when I get home

68_Step: Good call on having to re-tighten the bolts. I did use a stainless bolt kit and it came with the lock washers

Don Brace: I hope the Varathane holds up I will be only driving the truck in the summer. I am actually building the truck to pull my holiday trailer

Re: wood floor installed pictures

Squirel,
If that Varathane Diamond finish stuff is water based, yoo hoo! As it happens, I am going to be refinishing my patio sliding wood doors (probably over this long weekend). I'll pick up some of that Diamond finish and try it out. These doors are outside but under a shade structure so they don't get much direct sun and they're on the east side of the house so they really only get the cooler morning sun. They'll be a great test ground for using it later on my bed wood cause; like you, I intend my truck to be aweekend driver. I'll have a piece of carpet over it and a car cover over it most of the time.

nice bed...

you can go to www.gmcpauls.com and get all the measurements for the bed wood. Even shows the proper groove. I've seen pressure treated decking used for beater trucks...

my cabinet guy quoted $330 for the oak all cut to spec...

No, there are at least 2 more cross sills required for a longbed
