Re: 1966 C10 LB 2wd 283 4spd build

Just about to weld the rear of cab outer flange. The original had an upside down 5 stamped on it plus an upside down cross. Has anyone else seen something similar? I am deciding whether or not to duplicate this by stamping it on the new piece.

I will be using copper backing plates held on by cleco in order to make welding easier and keep things lined up.

Just found your thread...nice build...fearless on the welding work! I wish I was that fearless.

Re: 1966 C10 LB 2wd 283 4spd build

Have finished the rear flange of the cab by bead rolling the shape of the patch panels, welding new metal onto the inside rear floor, using Cleco fasteners to hold copper backing behind the welds, then plug welding the flange (copper rich weld-through primer used in the plug welded flange).

Re: 1966 C10 LB 2wd 283 4spd build

Decided to replace the inner/outer, firewall/kick panel edges. Used bending brake then shrinker/stretcher to form the bend.

Re: 1966 C10 LB 2wd 283 4spd build

I have the cab on its nose so that I can finish tidying and detailing the bottom. Created weld-on nuts for the seat bracket bolts by taping a rectangular block similar to the original style. Backed up butt welds where needed and cleaned up. Removed the goopy tar undercoating from the few areas that are original steel. Fabricated a replacement reinforcing plate at the back of the transmission opening, flanged on bead roller to match the shape of the cab floor (not the same as original, but instead modified so that moisture and mud will no longer collect) and added weld-on nuts.

Just doing the last thing on the cab, repairing the A-pillars. After repair, internal frame coating sprayed inside.

Re: 1966 C10 LB 2wd 283 4spd build

And onto the other A-pillar. Used a piece of welding rod as a filler so that I could remove a bit more material to get to clean metal and also served to adjust the gapping slightly. Will weld this 16g patch piece at a higher heat to melt it all nicely together. The drip rail piece will be plug welded on later.

Re: 1966 C10 LB 2wd 283 4spd build

Pfew. Finally got the passenger outer door skin in good shape. Good lesson for me. It's not easy to keep things straight and maintain the curvature of the panel when doing the full bottom straight across like that. Used copper backing plates attached by clecos. Welded with slowly applied and spaced tacks. Still had to get creative with hammer/dolly methods (using a hitch ball and scissor jack inside the door as "dollys"). Pushed out low spots with my makeshift dollys and hammered, off dolly method, on high spots. Filled in pin holes and cleco holes. . Got it quite close ...1/16 or so. Thinking absolute perfection is not possible so hopefully acceptable using bit of filler and high-build. I left the left and right ends unwelded for final flange hammer/dolly and panel alignment/flatness.

Getting down to some details.... driver's side grill support edge. Bending brake, bead roller with stepping dies, v-slits, stretcher, shrinker zillion times, bend, twist, hammer, cajole. Finally can cut old metal and fit.

...Fuel filler configuration in inner bedside. Let me know if anyone wants any details about the modifications. Next, weld the new inner bedside panel (with filler), and then frame goes off for sandblasting.
