Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

I'm having my tank service by a shop called Fingers ,they also do radiators, I was hoping like hundred bucks and no more then two , it'll still be less or around the same if buy new with shipping , my tanks in good condition from what I see just needs cleaning and maybe coating, worth the piece of mind. O K I'm done rambling, best with ours.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

Thanks. Mine is at the shop now. I’ll post pics when I get it back. Are you going to run an in-line filter or just roll with the clean tank?

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

The sending unit should have a filter sock on it where it takes in the fuel, and if you have a Quadrajet it has a replaceable filter built in, that is all you need.

Yep, also doing the same setup, the sending unit filter and carburetor filter.

If you still have the charcoal canister, return line on the fuel pump, and all of the other emissions stuff then you need the vent lines. If not, the vent lines aren't doing anything anyway and you don't need them. If you plug or cap the vent outlets just be sure you use a vented gas cap.

I have always cleaned my own tanks and I have had some pretty crappy ones. Take the cap off and the sender out, make sure all of the old gas is out of it and take it to the car wash. Use the soap solution on it first in both openings then high pressure rinse. Take it home and empty as much of the water out of it as you can and blow it out with a long air nozzle, put a couple of bottles of HEAT GAS LINE ANTIFREEZE in it and slosh it around and dump it out. Put the tank in and fill it up. You can put another bottle of HEAT in it when you put gas in it if you want to.

I have never had a tank coated. I don't know about the newer coatings but years ago a friend of mine had his tank cleaned and coated with Sherwin Williams "Sloshing Compound" gas tank sealer. 6 or 7 months later he started having all kinds of problems with the stuff flaking off and plugging up the fuel lines.

Does the heat antifreeze seem to remove the last of the old varnish in the tank?

I don't know about varnish but it removes any left over moisture.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

I got the tank back from the radiator shop. Unfortunately they painted the outside of it so I had to strip it. So anyone doing the same process should let them know not to paint it.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

So do I put the gas tank grommet on and then install the tank. Or install the grommet after the tank is in?

I put he grommet in after i install the tank and before i bolt it down, just use soap and water or spray window cleaner.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

For a 72 style grommet...i think the thicker earlier grommet may need to be installed first.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

I install the grommet in the cab, soap it up and install the tank filler through it.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

I tried to flush my own tank (radiator shops here are charging $250). There's a baffle in the tank that's fighting me. The cheap harbor freight hand bulb pump was ineffective. My last effort will be the mechanical pump one, step up from the bulb pump. If it does not work, the tank going to the landfill and im going to brothers or classic industries for a new tank

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

I topped mine off with fuel for the first time, after reinstallation, and the stupid thing is leaking around the sender.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank question.

Update. The tank must also have a hole rusted in it. The leak at the sender dried up but It is still leaking somewhere on the backside.

I ordered a new Spectra w/EEC from Autozone, $183.00, no shipping.
