Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

The resident experts have spoken. I think it's unanomious that those were unique to late 79 and 80's only.

Different question. I saw a similar cut hole on the rear door panel of a Burb. Was that same speaker box used on Burbs rear doors?

I think that would be pretty rare. Would be cool to have that option though.

Rear passenger door or rear barn door? There was a nice finished 4x10 grille in the rear side panels (and in some Blazers too) but I haven't seen any in the rear doors. I think the sound from a 4x6 would have a hard time travelling all the way from the rear of the cargo area, though.

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

I will have to see if I can find it now. This was a pic of a door panel from a barn door Burb posted on this site recently. In the pic it showed the back side of the door panel with a cut out that looked exactly like the one pictured here.

I was just curious if those boxes might have been used elsewhere. You know, just in case someone was looking for some....

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

I have 4 extra covers, but no extra mounting brackets.

I am currently restoring my set, and in the process if installing them on my door panels.

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

Wow I learn more and more every day I come to this forum. One more question about these door panels. I see two hole's between the arm rest and the speaker. What are those holes for map pocket? or other type of storage compartment? or maybe they are just drilled by PO

Last question is the brushed aluminum inserts 77-80 only because I'm buying a 76 but I'm going to convert to pw pl and I saw a truck with brushed aluminum pw pl I know 76 door panels are different and pw pl werent offered untill 1977.

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

Factory PW/PL were not offered in 73-76 because they would not fit in the doors, this is why the doors were changed in 77, to accomodate them. You might have problems on your 76, depending on what type of pw/pl you are going to install.

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

Can he use 77 and newer doors on his 76 though? I dont know how far along his body work is, but it might be benefical to swap doors now if you can, or look into an aftermarket kit if the stock power window setups wont work.

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

Just for more trivia, the Gentleman Jim's had speakers in the kick panels. Same speaker cover as the 80 door speakers, just vertical and in the kick panel. The metal of the cab was cut and there was a plastic cup behind them to seal.

Gentleman Jims had AM/FM 8 tracks.

Ken, I have 77+ doors on my 73, with 77-80 door panels.

When I bought my 73 back in 95, both orig doors had lots of bondo along the bottom...I bought new GM 77+ doors because they were only like $170 each when the 73-76 doors were a astonishing (sarcasm!) $230 or so. was told by the GM parts guy the ONLY diff was the door panels...well I found out the hard way the insides were different too. Wish I could go back in time and get a do-over.

I also bought a fender while I was there...$70!

Looks like those are the stock holes to mount the door pocket.

I'm looking for a pair of these speaker covers, I haven't been able to locate any yet. If anyone knows of any for sale, I'd sure be interested.

Thanks!

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

Wonder why the homes are there for a map pocket but the speakers have smaller holes. Wouldn't it look cleaner if they used a door panel without map pockets so no extra holes?
