Re: crew cab headliner board ?

Not a problem at all. If it wasn't for this board,... and OJOE,... I wouldn't be collecting parts to build my own. (this board is WELL WORTH the $25 bucks it costs to be a supporting member!)

Re: crew cab headliner board ?

Bringing this back from the dead.

I have been sitting on this one for a while - 1987 Chevy shorty:

I have been hoarding parts for quite some time.
3"/5" drop kit (springs/flip kit)
Chrome 15x8 rally rims
Brand new OEM GMC center caps for rally rims
Hidden hitch
Roll pan with flip down bracket for the hidden hitch
Charcoal interior (for regular cab but have light gray Suburban/Crew specific headliner trim pieces) including near perfect dash-pad
Brand new OEM Silverado door panels for manual windows and locks
Some other items I am not remembering right now

So I brought home this '87 GMC crew cab today:

The bed is rough as is the front clip and the interior. Runs decent even though it has been sitting for a few years and the price was right. But as I said earlier in this thread, I would sacrifice my '86 GMC long bed for the right crew cab project. Looks like I will be making that sacrifice!
It will be a while before I get this moving but will probably be asking questions here.

First questions:
OJOE has been using 1-ton frames but the crew I bought is a 3/4 ton. Will the 3/4 ton frame mate together with the 1/2 ton rear the same way as the 1-ton?
Is converting the 3/4 ton front suspension to the half ton as simple as just swapping spindles/brakes?
Thanks in advance!

Re: crew cab headliner board ?

Ok, I have read this twice and I have a question.
Is the 1 ton frame wider than the 1/2t? are you putting the rear half in a bind by slidding it into the front half of the 1t? Thanks

Re: crew cab headliner board ?

kevin1970, the frames on the crewcab 1 ton and 3/4 ton are same. manimal , the 1 ton and 1/2 ton frames are the same width. there is some flex in the two frames so there is no binding. the two frames slide together with little effort. here is the build thread for joe's truck http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=272118

If I could find a 4x4 I would have gone that direction. And that option will always still be open too.
I have had that shorty in my backyard for around two years. I have an '06 regular cab shorty and while that is great for commuting, it isn't so great for going places. I figured if I am going to put the time and effort into a short bed, it might as well be something different that what I have now and have some sort of usability too.

Plus this gives me two things which may not make any sense to anyone else.
First, for whatever reason, I have a preference for GMC's. No good reason for it, just have a thing. The green one is a chev but the crew is an actual GMC.
My goal with the green truck was to try to make it a complete Craigslist build. Granted I am not building a show truck. But so far, every part I have bought for this project has been from the pages of CL. Again, no good reason?

And after buying this one, I have told myself no more looking on CL for a while; I keep spending too much money...

I will do that. I feel bad enough for derailing this thread as much as I have!

I know you are/were planning a short-stepper 4x4.
I have an '85 GMC swb 4x4 in my back yard that I have to get rid of ASAP to make room. It is bent up on the frame horns but everything from around the engine back is fine.
If you could think of a way to get this to you I would be more than happy to give it to you? It is a rolling frame (no bed/cab) right now. If it were possible to remove the rear-axle and cut off the frame were needed under the cab I could put the frame section on a big pallet and ship it to you (you pay shipping). Maybe you already have the rear frame section you need though?
Anyways, just a thought. Would rather get this to someone with a need than take it to the scrappers. PM if you think something like this would work.

So about the front suspension, I am under the impression that just a spindle swap and I have 1/2 ton front suspension? Anyone confirm or refute this?

you will need to swap out a-frames and spindles the ball joints on 1 ton will not fit the 1/2 ton. good luck on your project

Re: crew cab headliner board ?

toomanytoyz, you know you will need to cut the top lip off the 1/2 ton frame so when the 2 frames meet they will be even on the top and all of your factory holes will line up in both frames. then you can bolt your cab mounts on, the bolts will go thru both frames and cab mounts.good luck joe

I am having a minor knee surgery on May 8th. I was hoping to get some things done before then, but isn't looking so good. It will be closer to Memorial Day before I can really start taking it apart.

My goal is to have it drivable with the short bed by the weekend after Labor Day. We go with my girlfriends parents to Seaside, OR for a car show every year. I won't be showing (nothing newer than 1960 anyways) but would like to drive it down. Provided gas isn't $5 a gallon...

Back when I had my CrewCab, I had an upholstery shop do the headliner for me. They just glued on some foam padding then glued on the material to that. It was molded to the shape of the roof panel. Looked good.

Just a thought...

Now all of you have made me want to build a CCSWB.

Nothing done yet. Still need to get the parts truck in the back yard hauled away before I bring this one home (sitting in the parking lot at work; just move it to a different spot a few times a week...)
