Re: 61 apache rear
I have dubbed her the name of Slow Ride. I just bought a tach to put in it so I am unable to tell you the rpms she is turning but I do know that she is wide open doing 45 and is screaming at 50. I usually only run about 40 so the cabin noise is minimal and I can still talk to my passenger. The truck is stock as can be. The only thing I have wanted to change to the drive line was the rear end. Now that I know that I can just swap the third member that will make her dreams of running out on the highway come true. But I have looked and it doesnt seem that aftermarket is favorable to that eaton. Do you have any idea where I can find a 4.10 at so I can ditch the 5.13

Re: 61 apache rear
That's the Eaton. BTW, nice truck! I think we would all like to see some more pictures.
Check the classifieds here on this forum and stovebolt.com (free to register and post ads there, BTW); here you have to register with a paid subscription to post them. You also might try posting at a site called pirate4x4.com; those guys seem to come up with 4.10's a lot and would gladly trade for 5.14's, because they want as low as possible a gear for "crawling" (a couple guys from the truck forums have traded with them before IIRC). You are looking for a third member for an Eaton HO-52 or HO-72, and FWIW (IIRC) tooth count should be 37/9 or 41/10 (different eras). You also might want to look at some taller tires; the ones you have on there now look they might be kinda short. Going to 4.10 from 5.14 will be about 25% of a gain by itself, but if you could for instance come up 3" or so in tire size that would be another 10% or so on top of that, if you still wanted the gearing to be a little "taller".

Re: 61 apache rear
Also, if you're looking in junkyards the 67-72 era 3/4 tons and 1 tons (C20/C30) are where you will most likely find the 4.10 gears (AFAIK); that's what most of them would have come in (the Eaton HO-52/72 was made 1947-1972 FYI). Both my '65 and '63 had been swapped though, so don't overlook older trucks; especially "beaters" that looked to have been driven a lot (both mine fall into that category). You may see evidence the gears have been swapped; silicone sealer around the third member is a great clue that someone might have stuck some taller gears in there.

Re: 61 apache rear
I would suggest swapping out that entire Eaton for either a Dana 60 or a 14 bolt. Those have much better gear selection and easier to get parts for. I installed a Dana 60 with 4.10 gears from a '78 F350, under my '66 C30. I did have to move the spring pads.

Re: 61 apache rear
I can not take credit for all of the work done to SLOW, my brother in law started this build with the intention of towing his corvettes with this truck. He lost interest and i have been working on finishing her out. So far, the 235 has been rebuilt from oil pan to valve covers. all new brakes front and rear, new front suspension and rear leafs re-arched. trans was rebuilt. The body was a two year project, it was in pretty good condition other than some rust, we replaced the rear corners, blocked out and leaded the entire body and filler was very minimal. She is now painted Pontiac Blue.
The future plans will be to finish the interior, I am putting in a worm eaten maple rear floor, black front carpet and haven't decided what color I want to reupholster the seats. I do have a question, i havent personally seen any of these trucks other than mine. the seats are original the passenger is a jumper but one is black and the driver is white. Is this the way it came from the factory? |

Re: 61 apache rear
Nice! Great pictures.
Glad to hear you already have a guy wanting to swap gears with you; I think your truck should have the tapered pinion bearings unless it was swapped for a much older one. IIRC there is an oiling passage you can see cast into the third member that's not cast into ones with ball bearings or something; I'll see if I can dig up where I read that.
