Better Buckle up then sit on the seat belt. You don't want to go through the back of the cab with all that torque.

OK, just got back from the shop. I got the engine all cleaned up and painted, except the oil pan since I'll have to take the pan from the 425. (need a rear sump, the 500 has a fromt sump) It looks good. An edelbrock intake and aftermarket valve covers would make it look better, but I ain't complaining.
A few things that need replaced before I can stab it, the timing chain is way too loose...even by my low standards.
Water pump has bad bearings...the fan wobbles. (and the pump on the 425 leaks out the weep hole)
Freeze plugs need replaced.
I need to look, but I am pretty sure I'll need a 425 style oil pump. The 500 one is bigger/angleds wrong. I'll verify this, but if it does need the 425 style, I'll need to find a good oil pump body. The one on the 425 is all buggared up from the piston skirt going through it. I rebuilt it with new guts..which is when i found the piston skirt and the gouges. So all I'll need is a good body, and my rebuild parts, and a proper gasket. (new pumps are about 75 bucks IIRC...I think i paid something like 50 bones for the rebuild kit...this is why I am trying NOT to buy a new one)
When i pull the pan, I'll be checkin out the bearings and see what they look like.

Would you believe, no real damage to the trunk??

When we were putting it in the trunk, the chain slipped off the forklift and dropped the engine from about 6 to 8 inches up. BOOM! About 6 dents on the trunk floor, and it smacked the little motor that pulls the femail part of the latch down when you shut the trunk. Now I have to slam it shut.

I kerfagled the rear lic plate a bit on a speed pump too.

LH man-what type of rear gears you runnin? Why is everyone telling you to change them? Did I miss something? I've been following your caddy bb saga and never saw your rear gear specs.
Dano

Damn!, that caddy engine is one of the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!

I have a 4.10 gear with 31 inch tall tires. With a one ton running an eaton rear, I am kinda limited to ratios. I wouls give my left (lug)nut for a big block rear, they have 3.56 or something like that. I know where there are a couple for sale, but they are a bit far for any of my junk to trust on the drive.

cadiac

You might want to contact board member cadiac. I saw a Caddy engine in his '73 & up chevy pickup, & it looked like the factory installed it. He also drove it at highway speeds from Wichita to Sioux Falls S. D. pulling a car hauler trailer............Z
