I've got mine sitting on the block right now...
Is it just me, or are these Vortecs lighter than the stock castings to boot?

Project,
Is that a BB or SB in your truck? I have been looking around on the internet and I am not finding any BB Vortecs out there. I am going to call around to the local yards and see what I can find.

350 smallblock...sorry, I have no idea where to find big block Vortecs. I don't think they're really anything special, given that the 454 wasn't rated a whole lot stronger than the 350 between '
96 and '98...

One problem with vortec heads: in stock form they can not accommodate very large lift. However, you can have them machined for larger springs/lift.
Pace parts has originals $239 each and already machined ones for $370 each |

You can find BB vortecs at www.sdpc2000.com . Hope this helps.

Sheesh...one other thing to note that I've never seen noted before...
The stock temp sensor is way too big to fit the Vortec's hole, but the '97 temp sensor is a two-wire deal for computer-controlled vehicles...is there any way to make it work with the stock gauge?

change the springs, even if you're putting in a small cam. put your temp sensor in the intake manifold, do port work to at least the exhaust side (the flow on the exhaust side sucks) its basically what edelbrock did with their "E-tec heads" cuz they knew that the exhaust flow isnt great. screw in studs are nice but thats just something i like to do. don't forget self aligning rockers OR!!! screw in studs and guideplates and you can run regular rockers, (dont use stock ones, gm rockers suck) regular full roller rockers won't fit i dont believe, but they make ones for vortecs that are narrower (self aligning) dont run self aligning and guideplates together. guideplates won't work with stock style centerbolt valve covers (ya know the black ones, the aftermarket chrome ones (wiht the red bowtie) prolly won't fit either) i used aftermarket ones from southern rods, the only downside is that the valve covers are a pain in the rear to get on with the valve covers i have, they gasket doesn't stay in the area real well and u hafta hold it on while u put em on (it sucks) but with the stock valve covers the gaskets stayed in them fine. maybe my valve covers suck i dont know. but they dont leak like regular small block valve covers do.
