I shaved mine on the top,to take it out complete is overkill and weakens the sides. But to each his own.

Removed mine over a year ago, no problems, but mines a short box so there were no center pockets...

I did one a few years ago and had no problems. I 've taken bedsides completly apart and let me tell you they are pretty solid.Those stake pockets don't really add that much more ridgidity to the the bed sides imo.The smoothness will look awsome , don't worry you will love it.

A shortbed has no center pocket, so I would think you would be OK on this longbed. It's only another 2 feet of bed. I say weld it up good and don't worry about bracing.
