have you priced caddy engine kits? wowsers! a SBC kit is $170, a big caddy kit is ~$800. that is why my 472 is still under the bench.

Awesome project.

Looks like that intake was off a 425 engine, they used single plane while the 500 & 472 used a dual plane. You would likely pick up even more if you did the same mods to a early (non-egr) dual plane with better port flow & better match on the ports.

Sorry, but I have a 500 in a Fox mustang and another in a G-body Malibu. A 425 in a chevy van to tow with. You might say I have a thing for these engines.

Good luck! Wait till you see the crud that is surely in your oil pan, the rest of the oil shedders and possibly some plastic teeth from the timing gear will be plugging the pickup screen for sure, might want to uncrimp the shell of the pickup, dissassemble it and clean real well too.

Ready to run the Big Cad is about 600 lbs, no accessories. They say that is about 60 lbs heavier than a sbc. I have read it really about a hundred more.
You can always change the intake and iron manifolds and drop the weight by 40 lbs or so.
I have heard the 425 is about a hundred lighter so right in the weight of a 350. But 75 more cubes and tons more torque.

If this wasn't a low $$ build, there are two different aluminum heads for the 500 now. MTS bought the old Bulldog heads and reworked the design so it's more usable. And CPP has scratch designed head for all out builds.

I just read an article in the newest car craft, dude scored a sweet Caddy (whole deal in minty fresh grandma-ness) put a single turbo on it and is dropping 13's @ 106 MPH, yeah is a nearly 3 ton 4-door cruise ship, if you get it together you should have a beast on your hands. Another thought would be to hunt a complete cad with a 500 in it, bet you could score a good low miler car cheaper than you could build your 500!? Worth a shot, dude in CC got his boat for $500 and drove it home!!

$2500 to $3000 for a pair of assembled heads, assuming the springs will work, isnt that bad really. Don't compare them to those Big Duke heads though. I got my RHS heads for $1300 bare and then tossed on another $1500 for a spring kit and Manley valves. I got my heads cheaper through my engine builder too so if I would have bought them retail I wuold have spent more.

I really hope that you mistyped that. If the magazine actually printed that then they have no editing/fact checking standards.

The 500 was in 70-74 Eldos, and all '75-76 Cadillacs except the Seville.

68-74 RWD cars had 472 engines (68 and 609 Eldos as well).

65-67 cars have a completely different engine family. The 429 in them was an updated version of the family that stated as a 331 in 1949.
