Re: DP's '66
IT RUNS...IT RUNS
Last week got my starter installed after having to switch- the first one I had (3510 MS) for some reason- I could not get it to shim up- took it back and got a new one (3510) and it engaged fine. For a trans xmember- took one from an '81 Camaro. Had to shorten it and re-drill holes in it and the frame. - did that last weekend. Also ran some temporary shorty pipes from the manifolds just to get the exhaust away from the block some. My plan was to get the trans xmember in tonite and then crank it up this weekend. Well I got the trans member in ok and then my buddy says- see if it will at least spark.... Well it did. Fired right up and was sounding good. Ran it for about 10 minutes or so and then went to set the timing. Started to adjust the distributor when zzzzzinggg. In our haste we forgot to secure the cap on the distributor and the metal piece on the rotor went flying... Didn't hurt the cap- so tomorrow will get a new rotor and hopefully finish breaking in the cam. The Edelbrock seemed to be loading up- so I may switch to a Holley. I rebuilt the Edelbrock, but it hasn't been tweaked yet. We will see. |

Re: DP's '66
Are the frame mounted trans cooler better than the flat ones that you tie strap to the radiator?

Replaced the Edelbrock with the Holley tonite and finished breaking in the cam. Had to get a new alternator as my pretty chrome one is bad. I think I bought it on Ebay- so we will see if I can get my $$$ back. |

Re: DP's '66
Finished the break-in on the cam and changed the oil. I strained the oil with a paint strainer to check for any dirt, metal etc and it came out real clean. Went with the 2- quart NAPA gold oil filter. Since it is a solid cam, I went ahead and used 30 wt non-detergent oil and added some break-in additive to keep the zinc up. Will change it again at about 500 miles. After the motor got warm, we noticed some water leaking... It ended up being the brand new heater core was defective- I bypassed it and then I pulled it yesterday. It is still under warranty- but a pain to pull. I am going to keep the 600 Holley- it is my buddies so I will just have to replace it sometime. Real happy with the way the motor sounds- you can just barely hear the cam, but you can feel it some as you lean on the fender. Have to finish up my exhaust- still haven't decided about mufflers and also finish hooking up the trans linkage and driveshaft. Going to use some of the leftover braided line to make a fuel line. I also dropped my pretty chrome alternator off to get rebuilt.
Modified cross member from '81 Camaro A little better view of the trans cooler. Last edited by DPowers; 09-19-2010 at 06:18 PM. |

Drove it for the first time today- up the road and back about a mile. A few bugs, but I am pretty excited.

Thanks
My sister-in-law works at an auto paint store and they made me up a couple of rattle cans- I will look and see if I can get the paint numbers. |

Re: DP's '66
Update- been working on the hood and trying to put the $$ together for exhaust and alignment. The last one is with the guide coat. Going to leave it primer for now and wait to paint the whole truck at a later date- cause I want to drive it!

Re: DP's '66
Painted the hood over the weekend. We watersanded one of the side cowls with 1500 and buffed it to try and match up the paint.

Re: DP's '66
Lookin' great D, that paint seems to match perfect. I think I'd blend in the places on the door, chunk a grille in, and drive the snot out of her!!
Subscribed, btw my first truck was a red/white '66 Custom Cab longbed just like that. Good memories!
