Re: New Years purchase

Some may want to know why I installed the cam now and not later after the pistons were in. Its alot easier to help the cam in so you dont score the bearings and wipe off your lube. With it 3 inches out lube up your mains again, then install it all the way in and then touch up your lobes and its all good.
Although the main reason with a 383 stroker ( even a mild one like this) is to have the cam in place as a turning assembly to check each rod and piston skirt for clearance in a full rotation. It's already hard enough to see, but make sure the rod shoulder and bolts clear the side of the block next to the oil pan surface. Also when they swing up into the cam. The lobe on # 6 is very close. You may need to do some grinding to make it clear in these areas. Now is not the time though.Make sure of all this before you do you final wash.

Re: New Years purchase

After checking all my clearances and torquing the crank down. I assembled the rods to the pistons, making sure the wrist pin keepers were in place good..I then installed my top two rings into the cylinder, squared them up in the hole with the piston top, then used a feeler gauge to check the ring gap while in the hole. Then installed them on that piston and install in that hole. Then rotate the engine to check clearance each time. Did all eight this way.

Re: New Years purchase

Installed the roller lifters and retainers.
Next the heads
Then lubed the pushrods, rockers and valve stem. Installed the pushrods and adjusted the valves. First at # 1 TDC then at #6 TDC.
Installed the intake and carb.

Re: New Years purchase

Got the engine finished up, Primed the oil pump with an old dist. shaft I hooked up to my drill. Reinstalled the distributor and fired her up on the engine stand I built years ago. Ran it for about 20 minutes with no issues other than a worn out distributor. The advance plates and holes were egg shaped causing way to much advance.
Installed a new MSN electronic unit and resolved all the problems. Set my timing and adjusted the carb with a vacuum gauge.
No leaks and ready to install. Dennis

Re: New Years purchase

I got back to it after a short break. Got the engine back in and took it for a test drive. Man--I am a fan of stroker motors now. I love the torque it has.
Took the top off and repainted it today.
Repainted the cowl also.
Tomorrow I'll start on the interior.

Re: New Years purchase

Nobody has ask that. I'm sure the clutch fan robs some power, but it works just fine. I did the engine build on this one to make it a little more driver friendly on the street and used new part brands that wouldn't break the bank. I guess my answer is gotta stop somewhere. I try to build a good looking dependable yet reasonable price range that I can still come out turning it.
Tell me your ideas?

Re: New Years purchase

Thats cool i'm hopefully gonna replace the three on a tree so0n and using a 350 trans because the parts are available and hopefully not break the bank.

How many horses will the clutch fan rob? I'm thinking about sticking with a clutch fan too. Just curious? thanks

Re: New Years purchase

Not sure what the HP numbers would be. Not enough to worry about in my application. Im also helping on a 37 Plymouth pickup that we are grafting the body to an 87 chevy 4x4 SWB. Will have to use a custom radiator and an electric fan on that just because of the lack of room in the stand up type original grille shell.
As for the video. Not sure how, but I'll look into it.

Re: New Years purchase

I like your engine build process. Not many builders install the crank timing chain gear prior to the crank install.

Re: New Years purchase

Thanks. I have seen allot done that way. Makes you wonder what kind of side clearance the rear main ends up with after all the beating is done.

Re: New Years purchase

I have a stumble in the engine that I cant seem to tune out. It only has 30 road miles and 1 hour engine stand break in. But I don't like it. SO
I did another compression test and found a couple cylinders not at my earlier test of 200 psi. Theres my problem.
Pulled it back down and found signs of a head gasket leaking. Machine shop found it .008 untrue. Resurfaced both heads and got them back tonight.
Here we go again.

Re: New Years purchase

Can I have some money to? Working part-time is killer. If there's something wrong with my truck I can't just go, "Oh the heads aren't trued.... Well lets run to the machine shop." I would have to save up. Nice rig though.

Re: New Years purchase

I didn't mean to sound arrogant. I'm sorry if it sounded that way. Just meant to update.
I am building it to turn and want the new owner to be happy and not have problems that would reflect back on me. I know many wouldn't care, but I do. I want it right. I work two jobs and time is limited for me also, but it wont take me long and the bill including gaskets was $200. I look at as $200 I had to spend now or not far down the road it would all be sh#t.

Re: New Years purchase

From the distant picture it looks as though the little fella is in nice solid shape under the '90s f@*d van interior, do the doors open with a key fob?
