New Years purchase

Pulled the trigger and bought this one today. I'm going to detail it and install the new 700 transmission that came with it. Drive it for a while then turn it to someone that likes Blazers or Jimmys. Dennis

I don't know for sure because I haven't seen it in the sun cleaned up. I'm thinking it was just the flash on the camara thad made it look orange. Dennis

Re: New Years purchase

Cleaning up nice. Although I have had setbacks. Replaced the trans with another turbo350.
Didn't like the carb settings on the holley. Tried to reset with no luck, so I did a rebuild on the carb and I like the results.
Checked the engine cylinder vacuum and found 60lbs in # 1 hole. Pulled the engine and found the top edge ( 1/4 x 2 inch long) portion of the piston gone.
Ordered the parts today to build a 383 stroker with vortec heads. Hope to have those parts this weekend.

Re: New Years purchase

sucks that you had a bad piston...kind crazy it still had that much compression. You gonna do a build thread?

Re: New Years purchase

I would rather not say what I paid, because I'll be selling it when I'm done. Seems like every one wants to pay less than I did.
Anyway---- Yes it is a great platform to start with. I think it will be real nice when finished. I'm looking forward to the stroker build.

Re: New Years purchase

Nice! Sucks about the motor though

Yeah, never tell anyone what you paid if you want to sell someday, you can do 5K worth of improvements and people only "hear" what you paid and want to pay less than you did It makes perfect sense for a new car, but not a classic

Re: New Years purchase

picked up my parts Friday afternoon.
Started with a 1999 350 Vortec engine--machine work done with a .030 over bore. Crank is a 400 turned down to fit the 350 block.Went with a dished piston to bring the compression to a driver friendly 9.5.Chose the 5.7 long rod with a floating wristpin and threaded into the rod to accept bolts. they come with rounded shoulders. This was to avoid any grinding on the rod caps and bolts to clear the cam and block with their longer angle and throw.
Pressure washed with soap and water all the parts including the block, crank and heads. Then blew dry with air. Now ready to build

Re: New Years purchase

With the cam in, it was time to place the crank. Checking with plastic gauge before the final coating of assembly lube.Lots of assembly lube and being clean in the process is the key.

Re: New Years purchase

Next I installed the timing chain and cam sprocket. Used locktite on the threads. I installed the crank sprocket when the crank was out so I wouldn't damage the crank thrust bearing by tapping the gear on while in the journals.
My bolts are all in labeled sandwich bags for easy locating. Cleande and brushed threads before installing.
