On the AAW Classic update kit all the wires are labeled and the instructions are pretty good. Plus the quality is there. You can wire it totally stock or support aftermarket gauges and accessories. I have that kit and really like how it supports all the extra stuff I have like power seats and aftermarket gauges.

I'm stripping my truck down now for a total restoration , so before i put the thing back together i wanted some info on the wiring harness. what do you guys think of just using the old one again?, my original wire harness is in mint shape , because my truck only has 14,000 original miles on it , so what do you think? get a new updated one or stick with the old ? thanks gmcdeadhead

Part of me likes that idea, since it's original to the truck and in mint condition. The other side of the consideration is that in 45 or so years that harness has gone through numerous heat and chill cycles, which may have caused some of it to become brittle, and wiggling it around removing and reinstalling it may turn up problems you didn't have before. All of the wire is covered with vinyl which can melt and burn, and some of the factory harness was substantially undersized, particularly on the lighting grounds.

Virtually all new harnesses use crosslinked wire, and unless you're doing a pure stock restoration, you'll probably want to upgrade the charging circuit for a more powerful alternator and the headlight circuit for relays and full size ground wires. Running separate ground wires to each of the light buckets will eliminate all the potential electrical gremlins which plague the tail lights and turn signals on these trucks. None of these improvements would be appropriate for a pure restoration, but they make ownership more enjoyable.

i used a painless kit which im happy with now.. the only down side is you have to use the old connection and no wires for the reverse lights
