Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

I bought a pair of these off Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy...item3caa0a8770

His work is first rate and they came powdercoated and ready to bolt on. He also has the list for pieces that you can buy locally either new or used to do the swap. I haven't got the swap done yet as I am still buying pieces one payday at a time.

Their kit is really nice but most guys on here can beat their price by quite a bit by buying the brackets and picking up the rotors and calipers locally.
Price it out on your favorite parts houses website or by walking in with a shopping list. I asked and they wouldn't sell the brackets separate either.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey there,
Yeah it is a nice kit but I innately don't trust a caliper that is designed for a car on my 3/4 ton beast especially when towing a trailer or hauling a load . I will probably have as much in my build as one of the kits cost but nice thing is the seperate e brake and dual piston calipers. That is a biggie imho.

The 4x4 boys use that kit and run the Front calipers on the rear. The Cad Eldo calipers are the same size as the 3/4 ton truck front calipers except that they have the E brake hardware. Pads are the same size from 72 Camaro up though 74 K 30 Suburbans. No worry about "car" parts being whimpy.

Down side to this conversion bracket is no E brake!

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Actually on that one you substitute a rear eldorado caliper that has an ebrake built into it. My setup I am working on has a seperate e brake from the caliper. Not that I am planning to produce any kits just the plans to do your own with a little machine shop help .

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

No machine shop here, I have to go over and hope I can catch my buddy who is the guy who has the equipment to fabricate anything out of metal that you could imagine but catching him at home when he has time is a real challenge. If you can use all factory parts and make it work it's a great idea and concept. I'd have probably followed right along if I didn't have half the setup on the shelf waiting for the swap already.

Yep on the Eldo rear calipers. A lot of the 44 guys with dedicated off road rigs don't care if they have parking brakes but on the street they come in handy.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey Mr 48,
My machinist is hard to catch as well since he is retired lol. I have to call and schedule his time a week ahead at some points. The only thing I cant get from the factory unfortunately is the xle mounts that are welded on they sell the whole axle housing at a ridiculous cost. even the junkyard are proud of them so I came up with this idea instead. It is an adventure of twelve years and am looking forward to being able to drive my beast once again

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

ok machinist got the caliper spacers made and the rotor/stud spacer centering bushing made and now he has the aluminum to make the adapter plates so should have this all wrapped in another couple of weeks. He is also working on an adapter that mates the dodge e brake cables to my factory crossmember. here are some pics of the caliper spacers and the rotor bushings. He made the bushing as a press in and he is making me a little tool like a bearing installer to install and remove them . 4 Csliper spacers and 16 rotor bushings. Going to take the sketches and designs plans to a drafting company or one of my friends and see if they can make up a design sheet for the adapters and see how much it will cost to do so then can put it on my website for yall to download em.

I know how that goes. Great project. Can't wait to see it done.

I will draft up the CAD drawings of the brackets if one of your friends can't do it for you.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey 68tt,
That would be awesome. Email me a set when you get finished and willl post them up to my website. I talked to my machinist yesterday and he said he would be willing to do a few extras for people that are interested. main things he will need from later models trucks would be a backing plate for the bracket openings or a good solid measurement of its inner diameter. if anyone is intereted in talking to him pm and i will give you his number and name.

Going to call him this morning and see if he has my brackets finished.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Ok got the brackets finished finally. Will warn you now this guy is less exp than most machinists I have talked with and I am into this for 1300 in machining alone. It will probably help if you take them plans I am setting up and see what kind of deal you can make with a machinist nearby to you. Will have the bracket sketches up tommorrow evening. He fubarred on one of them but we made the mods and adjustments to get it right so it wont buckle.
Will have more up tomorrow when I get my hands on a 7/16 allen key for the bolts and get everything else in place.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

well got everything backing plate wise bolted up but have to take the rotors and bushings back for a little more clearancing they wouldnt slide on last night so going to have to open them up abit so they allow for heat expansion during braking that and to make them easy to get on and off. I am going to do rough dimensions on the backing plate adapters since every one of them is going to be custom fit for what you are installing them on since there are corporate, dana, and eaton axles under our trucks. This set fits the early d60's. Whichever caliper bracket you get whether it is chevy or ford/dodge setups will have its own measurements for the inner diameter locating ring. I dont have a set of the chevy's handy to do any measuring on atm.

I am uploading a 1200x800 jpeg on my website of these measurements.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Well got everything assembled and OH heck found a big flaw in my plans the rotors aren't wide enough so back to stage 2 looking like I am gonna need chevy brackets to match the rotors. big hellacious hickie now lol. well back to finding parts. going to look at parts from a 2008 chevy next. the dodge rotors from the axle I got are 13.85 inches in diameter, ford closest to this setup are 13.58 inches and the chevy 2008 are 13 inches exactly steep learning curve here so yall will benefit once this is finished

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

That's some good work that you have going on, sorry to hear about your setback. I was wondering what do you mean that the rotors that you are working with are not wide enough?

I have thought about the same thing using the backing plates off a 2008 Dodge backing plates, then I ran into clearance issues with the caliper bracket. Then decided to abandon the parking drum within the rotor and now going with a drive line parking brake, with 2009 Dodge front rotors and F550 calipers, just waiting for the brackets to come back from the machine shop.

If you are looking for rotors that have a deeper hat, you might want to take a look at the the rear ones for a 2009 Dodge, last time I had a set they were about 5" deep and 14" in diameter.
